I am a third year master major in automation at Shanghai Jiao Tong

University, P. R. China. With tremendous interest in Industrial Engineering, I

am writing to apply for acceptance into your Ph.D. graduate program.

Education background

In 1995, I entered the Nanjing University of Science & Technology

(NUST) -- widely considered one of the China’s best engineering schools. During

the following undergraduate study, my academic records kept distinguished among

the whole department. I was granted First Class Prize every semester,In 1999, I

got the privilege to enter the graduate program waived of the admission

test.

At the period of my graduate study, my overall GPA(3.77/4.0) ranked top 5%

in the department. In the second semester, I became teacher assistant that is

given to talented and matured students only. This year, I won the Acer

Scholarship as the one and only candidate in my department, which is the

ultimate accolade for distinguished students endowed by my university.

Presently, I am preparing my graduation thesis and trying for the honor of

Excellent Graduation Thesis.

Research experience and academic activity

When a sophomore, I joined the Association of AI Enthusiast and began to

narrow down my interest for my future research. With the tool of OpenGL and

Matlab, I designed a simulation program for transportation scheduling system. It

is now widely used by different research groups in NUST. I assumed and fulfilled

a sewage analysis & dispose project for Nanjing sewage treatment plant. This

was my first practice to convert a laboratory idea to a commercial product.

In retrospect, I find myself standing on a solid basis in both theory and

experience, which has prepared me for the Ph.D. program. My future research

interests include: Network Scheduling Problem, Heuristic Algorithm research

(especially in GA and Neural network), Supply chain network research, Hybrid

system performance analysis with Petri nets and Data Mining.

Spring Festival is our Chinese traditional festival, is the most important festival, of course, in many of the festivals, my favorite is the Spring Festival. Because the Spring Festival family can be together to reunion, the old welcome new, but also can sit together to watch the Spring Festival Gala.

Not much is known about the earliest London Bridge although it’s location is thought to be near the present one. The Construction of Tower Bridge began in 1885 and it was opened 9yrs later by Edward VII the then Prince of Wales, Amidst pomp and ceremony. It is the only bridge in London that can be raised to allow ships to pass. Since the Thames is no longer used much as a trade and shipping route, the complex lifting mechanism is only used 4 or 5 times a week. But， in recent years， with the development of the world， many different attitudes between the young and the old towards the spring festival come forth. The old are still pay more attention to the spring festival， but the young gradually change the mode to spend their spring festival holiday， such as travel overseas.

When I am a childhood， I celebrated the spring festival with my family about a month in my winter vacation in traditional way， such as helping cleaning our houses， putting red couplets on gates， setting off firecrackers， and wear new clothes. Now， I spend only 4 or 5 days at home with my parents in celebrating the spring festival， then I will hurry back to work. Maybe in the near future， I will have no time celebrating spring festival hometown， and my parents have to come to stay with us in the city.

Whether or no， I like the spring festival. It is one of the most important part of our Chinese culture. However busy I am， I will try my best to celebrating it with the traditional way to protect those our ancestor has leave behind.

The Spring Festival comes in winter。 It is the most important traditional festival in China。

People usually go home to spend the festival with their family。 They have a big family get-together。 The Chinese people have big meals and watch TV during the Spring Festival。 They also visit their friends and relatives。

Children like the Spring Festival very much because they needn’t go to school and they have a lot of time to play。

元宵节，是中国的传统节日。去年，我过了个很不一样的元宵节。

那天，全家人都在家。妈妈建议：“今天，我们自己包汤圆吃。”我高兴极了，像小鸡啄米似的连连点头答应。我从来只吃过汤圆，但还没有包过呢!

我先和妈妈去菜场买食材。回到家后，奶奶拿来一袋糯米粉，还教我将搓好成型的糯米团分成一小块一小块的。爸爸妈妈则将桌子擦干净，铺上白纸，撒上糯米粉。

准备就绪，开工了。妈妈做了一个给我看，我也学着做。把一小块糯米团揉成小圆球，压一个小洞，将芝麻放进去，就大功告成了。再一看，却傻了眼，芝麻像水一样，慢慢流出来。旁边一位“长者”告诉我，是因为芝麻放得太多了。又一个好了，这个才叫完美。

晚上，我们全家吃好汤圆，到街上去看灯。只见街上人上人海，整条街道都已变成“人行道”，一眼望去看不见人流末尾。我们也随着人流汇入灯区。只见，各种彩色的灯，像天上的繁星一样大放光彩。只见那“几千条”金黄色的闪光从六、七米的“高空”悬下，如瀑布一般，让人眼花缭乱。瞧，那一盏盏五彩缤纷、千姿百态的花灯真是令人大饱眼福。有红彤彤的“五角星;有昂首挺胸的“小公鸡”;还有活泼可爱的“小猴子”……

直到月亮渐渐西落，我们才依依不舍地离开。这真是个令人难忘的元宵节啊!
