例如：《红楼梦》中对于林黛玉的描写：“两弯似蹙非蹙笼烟眉，一双似喜非喜含情目。态生两靥之愁，娇袭一身之病。泪光点点，娇喘微微。闲静似娇花照水，行动如弱柳扶风，心较比干多一窍，病如西子胜三分”。作者不是泛泛来写，而是抓住“眉”与“目”作为切入点重点来写，突出她的“娇”“弱”的气质。林黛玉外貌的其他部分，则让读者自己去补充想象。又如作家魏巍的《我的老师》中关于老师蔡芸芝先生的描写：“她那时有十八九岁。右嘴角边有榆钱大小一块黑痣。在我的记忆里，她是一个温柔而美丽的人”。一颗美人痣，就足以写出了蔡芸芝先生的美丽，让我们永远留下了深刻的美好印象。一代文豪鲁迅先生在《孔乙己》中写“孔乙己是站着喝酒而穿长衫的唯一的人。”没有过多的语言，一句话就总括地勾画出了孔乙己独特的身份和社会地位。

鲁迅先生讲过：“忘记是谁说的了，总之是，要极省俭的画出一个人的特点，最好是画他的眼睛。我认为这话是极对的了，倘若画了全副的头发，即使画得逼真，也毫无意思。”采用画龙点晴法描写人物的外貌，并不是说描写人物只能描写眼睛。这里含有抓住重点的意思，也就是说要把最富有个性特点的东西写具体，把人物写活。

其次，善于运用确切的比喻和适当的夸张突出人物肖像的主要特征。

在肖像描写中，别致巧妙的比喻和夸张能给人以想象的空间，会让你描写的人物形象更生动、更传神。许多大作家的大手笔都是在肖像描写中善用比喻的典范，很值得我们学习借鉴。例如鲁迅先生在《高老夫子》中写高老杆肩膀一扇一扇的走路的姿势，“像木匠牵着的钻子似的”。在《故乡》中，写豆腐西施是“凸颧骨、薄嘴唇，五十岁上下的妇人站在我面前，两手搭在髀间，没有系裙，张着两脚，正像一个画图仪器里细脚伶仃的圆规”。把张开的两脚比做图仪器里细脚伶仃的圆规，生动的刻画了尖酸刻薄的“豆腐西施”杨二嫂形象。魏巍在《谁是最可爱的人》中写马玉祥“他长着一副微黑透红的脸膛，高高的个儿，站在那儿，像秋天田野里一株红高粱那样淳朴可爱”，就运用了确节的比喻，把马玉祥比作“秋天田野里一株红高粱”，形象地写出了马玉祥——一个来自北国青年的淳朴的气质。刘鹗《绝唱》“从后台帘子里面，出来一个男人，穿了一件蓝布长衫，长长的脸儿，一脸疙瘩，仿佛风干福橘皮似的，甚为丑陋。”把他的都是疙瘩的脸比作风干的福橘皮，突出他面容的丑陋。

有时描写人物外貌，可用漫画的笔法。契诃夫的《套中人》在刻画别里科夫的外貌时，就是这样漫画化的：“他(指别里科夫)所以出名，是因为他即使在顶晴朗的天气也穿上雨鞋，带着雨伞，而且一定穿着暖和的棉大衣。他的雨伞总是用套子包好，表也总是用一个灰色的鹿皮套子包好;遇到他拿出小折刀削铅笔，就连那小折刀也是装在一个小套子里的。他的脸也好像蒙着一个套子，因为他老是把它藏在竖起的衣领里面。他戴黑眼镜，穿羊毛衫，用棉花堵上耳朵眼;他一坐马车，总要马车夫支起车篷。总之，在这人身上可以看出一种经常的、难忍难熬的心意，总想用一层壳把自己包起来，仿佛要为自己制造一个套子，好隔绝人世，不受外境影响。现实生活刺激他，惊吓他，老是闹得他六神不安。也许为了替自己的胆怯、自己对现实的憎恶辩护吧，他老是歌颂过去，歌颂那些从没存在过的东西;实际上他所教的古代语言，对他来说，也就是雨鞋和雨伞，使他借此躲避了现实生活”。鲁迅先生在《阿Q正传》中，写阿Q头上的癞疮疤：阿Q“先前阔”，见识高，而且“真能做”，本来几乎是一个“完人了，但可惜。他体质上还有一些缺点。最恼人的是他头皮上颇有几处不知起于何时的癞疮疤。……一犯讳，不问有心与无心，阿Q便全疤通红的发起怒来，估量了对手，口讷的他便骂，气力小的他便打;然而不知怎么一回事，总还是阿Q吃亏的时候多。于是他渐渐的变换了方针，大抵改为怒目而视了”。这两段文字，都没有全面地去写人物的眼睛、鼻子、嘴巴，而是抓住人物外形的某一特征，用漫画笔法，带有一点夸张式地去勾勒。尽管在作品中，这两个人物在这时还是和读者初次见面，但他们的可笑的外表，一下子就深深地刻印到人们的心上。对他们的性格特征：一个是思想僵化的畸形人，一个是精神胜利法的可怜虫，也获得了具体的感受。运用漫画笔法描写人物外貌，往往在“点”上用力，漫画夸张的地方，正是人物外貌中最能反映其性格特征的关键部位。它不全面铺开，而是选准一点，把镜头对准它着力描写，好比把一个物件放到显微镜上让人们观看一样。

以上例子中所用的比喻都很确切，因而这种肖像描写都能鲜明地显示人物的性格，但是运用这种手法并非轻而易举就可奏效，它要求作者对人物性格有深刻的理解，对生活有细致的观察，对喻体和本体的关系有清楚的认识，然后才能运用确切的比喻和适当的夸张使人物肖像活灵活现。否则，只能是一般化的泛泛比喻，也不会写出不同人物的不同肖像，也就不能显示出人物的个性。
