一跨入农历腊月，各家各户就开始准备年货了。第一批是腌制品，鸡、鸭、鱼、肉琳琅满目地挂满廊前、屋下、阳台。鱼干的种类有许多，如螺蛳青、扁鱼、白条鱼……晒得差不多时，老人们便拎着一个塑料袋，去城市广场的农副产品交流会抢购物美价廉的食品。到了腊月下旬，廿三晚上都要拜拜灶神，送灶神上天，可以不让他在玉皇大帝面前说人们的错误。
过了腊月十二的夜晚，老人们说话都分外小心起来，最忌讳提及“死”、“穷”等字眼，过年穿的新衣服也开始物色与张罗。之后，大人们就会去到超市，去买汤圆等食品，会将在腊月上旬搡好、浸好的年糕拿出来，为年夜饭做准备。
到了除夕，一出门，到处都是酒肉的味道，家家户户都准备好了丰富的美味佳肴，主要都有年糕，象征着年年高、八宝菜，象征着富贵、鱼，象征着年年有余，有一养菜不能缺，那就是鲞冻肉，关于这道菜，还有个传说呢！相传有一农户，家里有一个尖酸刻薄的婆婆和一个秀外慧中的媳妇，除夕吃晚饭时，婆婆故意将鲞头烧入鲞冻肉中专让媳妇食用。小叔看了，批评其母，说她不该如此对待嫂嫂，媳妇听后笑着说：“叔叔错怪了婆婆一番好意，这是为我讨个吉利，今年有鲞头，明年更有享头了。”这句话打破了尴尬的局面，婆婆深受感动，从此一家和睦，日子越过越好，因此流传至今。
正月初一，古称“元旦”称大年初一，这一天为绍兴一年中最隆重的节日，通常以“汤圆”、“如意糕”作早餐。正月初二，人们就开始走亲访友，恭贺新禧，亲友则以酒、菜盛情款待，长辈还会将事先包好的红包给小辈。
“正月十五月儿圆！”元宵节是春节的尾声，这一天，家家都要吃汤圆，南方称汤圆‘北方则称元宵，这一天晚上会有猜灯谜的活动，家人都会带着孩子去猜灯谜，看灯会。这一天也是寒假的尾声。
这就是古城绍兴的春节，传统的民风民俗将这个小城市渲染的分外热闹。
