禅宗的方法简捷可行，并能贯穿和深化儒道思想，易为士大夫们接受，有普遍性；而且其本身含摄了佛教的全部精义，有蓬勃的生命力。一个禅者本身就是一粒种籽，不论在何种环境中都可以生根、发芽、开花、结果。较其它诸宗有不可比拟的优越性，遂使它在一千多年的历史中成为中国佛教的主流和主体。
