A condominium, or condo for short, is an apartment that is owned by the occupant, not the building owners.

Most American are happy to talk about their homes. And if theyve done anything special in their home, theyll let you know what it was, and maybe tell you what it cost to put in the Jacuzzi, deck or patio, etc. Most Americans live in cities, but nearly as many live in suburbs. Suburban American has shopping centers called malls and residents usually need a care to get around. Most of the houses in the suburbs are one or two stories tall, with private yards and gardens and garage. There are few tall buildings in the suburbs. Cities have neighborhoods, warehouse stores, and public transportation is usually pretty good. Private houses might only have a back yard, and if there is a garage it probably is small. Cities have a lot of apartment buildings and some tall buildings may seem to scrape the sky , so they are called skyscraper .

In the current world, college students become morally more tolerant to the phenomena such as exam—cheating, academic dishonesty and default on loans. In this case, it’ s urgently important that we conduct moral education in college.

Moral education is beneficial in the following aspects. To begin with, it makes us aware of our personal responsibility. We must comply with social moral standards and learn to behave and conduct ourselves in society. Secondly, moral education teaches us to shun evil and do good, turning the uncivilized to the civilized. Thirdly, with higher moral standards, we will be more considerate towards others and avoid quarrels or conflicts, which contributes to maintaining a harmonious society.

As for how to conduct moral education in college, on one hand, theoretical moral education should be integrated into all aspects of campus life, including classroom teaching and extracurricular activities. On the other hand, we should encourage students to take part in moral practices such as volunteer activities. Through these measures, they will know better about the meaning of life and shoulder their social responsibilities.

Chinese are very generous while educating children. Not caring about the money, parents of-ten send their children to the best schools or even abroad to study because they believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is.

So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money oneducation. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their children. However, the best early education is usually very cheap. Childrens skills vary. Most parents fail to realize though, what children lack today is self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple choice tests and study well instead of the most important skills of being confident, happy and clever. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework. Cooking will improve many skills children need later in life. Though demanding patience and time, it is an enjoyable experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking,so he works hard and gradually finishes his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence. Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set your child plays with will make him curious and arouse his interest.

He may spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

Do your teachers still use traditional techniques to teach you nowadays? A

revol- ution in teaching techniques is required now. In the past, we just took

it for granted that a teacher s aim was to teach the students all that he knew

and solve all the problems for them. Therefore, students could mot judge things

on their own under this circumstance. Thus students gradually lost the ability

to learn by themselves. In addition, they were only equipped with the knowledge

that were taught in class and made the same judgement upon every problem which

might crop up. Of course, they would find their knowledge not enough to solve

practical problems.

So it is time to change the teaching method. A teacher s goal is to help

the students develop not only the ability to learn by themselves but the skills

to make judgements on every aspect on their own. It s not necessary for the

students to turn to teachers for help while meeting with difficulties. The first

thing is to develop the students abilities to make sound judgements upon any

problem and overcome difficulties.

All in all, the aim of teaching is to liberate, but mot to fetter the

students innate powers of making sound judgements.

Chinese Families and American Families

提纲

Both Chinese families and American families are smaller than they used to be。 Most young Chinese parents have only one child, while young Americans also prefer to have fewer children than their parents have。

However, unlike the Chinese young people, many young American couples think it is not easy to get along with their parents。 They will leave their parents and have their own homes once they get married。 Many of them would almost never live with their parents again。 It is a sad thing indeed。

Things are different in China。 Both the young and the old admit the problems between them, but they will try to understand each other。 Besides, sons and daughters in China will feel that they must take care of their old parents while old people cannot help wanting to do some thing for their busy children。 So it is still very common in todays China to see married sons and daughters living with their parents。 However, China no longer has families where four generations live under the same roof。

The benefits of immigrating to the United States, whether you believe it or not, is an interesting phenomenon in the United States and naturalization, which is that the number of people applying for citizenship has soared in the era of immigration regulation. Throughout the millennia, students of all ages in China have had to endure the miseries of learning by rote. Teachers have stifled creativity in the pursuit of the accumulation of facts, and parents have forced children to spend mind-numbing hours cramming for exams. But for the past year, the government has been experimenting with what could amount to revolutionary changes in Chinas classrooms. The aim is to make education more pleasant, more useful and, above all, to challenge students to think for themselves.

What has prompted the reforms is a belated recognition that Chinas education system is failing to produce enough innovative thinkers. In addition, students are deeply unhappy. A survey conducted by the Education Ministry five years ago found more than 80% of students disliked school. Dropout rates have been rising in rural areas—partly for economic reasons but also because of the stultifying atmosphere of their classrooms. Exam pressures frequently lead to suicides. According to a survey last year among senior secondary-school students and university freshmen in one area, more than 50% had considered killing themselves.

Several other countries in East Asia, including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, are grappling with similar problems. But the implications of Chinas reform efforts are particularly profound. Chinas traditional education methods are ideally suited to a political culture that requires citizens to submit blindly to authority. By encouraging students to question their teachers and regard them as equals (even official literature now talks of fostering a “democratic” atmosphere in classrooms), China could be ushering in a new kind of relationship between the rulers and the ruled.

When meeting someone for the first time it is customary to shake hands both for men and for women. Hugs are only exchanged between close friends. Kissing is not common and men never kiss other men.

Americans will usually introduce themselves by their first name and last name (such as “Hello I’m John Smith”) or if the setting is very casual by their first name only (“Hi I’m John”). The common response when someone is introduced to you is “Pleased to meet you.” Unless someone is introduced to you with their title and last name (such as Mister Smith or Miss Johnson) you should address them by their first name. Americans normally address everyone they meet in a social or business setting by their first name. However you should always address your college professors by their title and last name (such as Professor Jones) unless they ask you to do otherwise.

ghosts and goblins are more than halloween decorations or costumes for many americans who confessed they believe in the supernatural and returning from the grave。

thirty—seven percent of 2,100 adults questioned in a zogby interactive poll said they think ghosts are real, and 23 percent believe they have been visited by a deceased relative or friend。

even the 22 percent who said they have not had any ghostly experiences themselves know someone who has。

"more than a third of americans have this belief that ghosts do exist," said a spokesman for zogby, adding that the findings were surprising。

nearly half of those questioned said if they could be a ghost, they would choose to come back as themselves。

but belief in the supernatural is not required to enjoy halloween。 eighty—seven percent of parents said their children would be dressing up for the holiday and 71 percent would be trick—or—treating。

but 41 percent of adults said they were not celebrating halloween, including 12 percent who cited religious reasons。

serial killers were deemed to be the scariest costumes, followed by the walking dead and zombies。

the american revolution was not a sudden and violent overturning of the political and social framework, such as later occurred in france and russia, when both were already independent nations. significant changes were ushered in, but they were not breathtaking. what happened was accelerated evolution rather than outright revolution. during the conflict itself people went on working and praying, marrying and playing. most of them were not seriously disturbed by the actual fighting, and many of the more isolated communities scarcely knew that a war was on.

america's war of independence heralded the birth of three modern nations. one was canada, which received its first large influ of english-speaking population from the thousands of loyalists who fled there from the united states. another was australia, which became a penal colony now that america was no longer available for prisoners and debtors. the third newcomer-the united states-based itself squarely on republican principles.

yet even the political overturn was not so revolutionary as one might suppose. in some states, notably connecticut and rhode island, the war largely ratified a colonial self-rule already eisting. british officials, everywhere ousted, were replaced by a home-grown governing class, which promptly sought a local substitute for king and parliament.

Santa Claus was born in US in the 1860s he was named this as he had a white beard and a belly,so he was named Santa Claus as this was the Dutch word for St Nicholas,Sintaklaas.Although the Dutch had bought him with them in the 17th century,he did not become an important person at Christmas until the Novelist Washington Irving put him in a novel that he wrote in 1809.This first Santa Claus was still known as St.Nicholas,he did smoke a pipe, and fly around in a wagon without any reindeer, but he did not have his red suit or live at the North Pole,he did however bring presents to children every year.

In 1863 He was given the name Santa Claus and bore the red suit, pipe, and his reindeer and sleigh.

Now Christmas celebrations vary greatly between regions of the United States, because of the variety of nationalities which have settled in it.

In Pennsylvania, the Moravians build a landscape, called a putz - under the Christmas tree, while in the same state the Germans are given gifts by Belsnickle, who taps them with his switch if they have misbehaved.

Early European settlers brought many traditions to the United States. Many settled in the early days in the South, these settlers would send Christmas greetings to their distant neighbors by shooting firearms and letting off fireworks. In Hawaii this practice is still in use as under the sunny skies,Santa Claus arrives by boat and Christmas dinner is eaten outdoors.

In Alaska,a star on a pole is taken from door to door, followed by Herods Men,who try to capture the star.Colonial doorways are often decorated with pineapple,a symbol of hospitality.

In Alaska, boys and girls with lanterns on poles carry a large figure of a star from door to door. They sing carols and are invited in for supper.
