他曾经是一个拥有无数财产的市长，可他却把绝大多数的钱都捐给了慈善机构和穷人们。以至于他往往出门时口袋里装满了钱，回来时又都空了。除此之外他还经常把面包送给挨饿的人，把衣服送给挨冻的人;到处访贫问苦。对于穷人而言，他就像一顶保护伞，一个正义的化身。

其中最具代表性的就是他对芳町与珂赛特母女的关爱。为了实现芳町临死前能见一面自己亲生女儿的愿望，他不惜再一次越狱(而这一次越狱，对他来说则是终身苦役犯的代价)。虽然最后芳町还是没能实现自己的愿望就死去了，可他却始终坚持不渝地完成他对芳町——一个毫不相干的死人的诺言……

最终他救出了珂赛特。并用毕生的精力把她当作自己女儿一样细心地照顾着。

是什么力量促使他去对那么多毫无血缘关系的人，给予无微不至的关爱呢?因为他已经把这个世上所有贫苦、可怜的人都看作自己的亲生儿女一样，以“父亲”的义务与责任感去照顾每一个“子女”。这种爱才是至高无上的，才是博爱

有一位老人被压在车下，整个车子的重量都压在他的胸口上，此时除非谁去把车子从下面撑起来，否则无法把他救出来。谁有那么大的力量呢?人们都知道只有一个正在被通缉的苦役犯——冉阿让，才有那么大的力量。当时身为“马德兰市长”的冉阿让正在旁边，可他要是去救的话，等于承认自己就是冉阿让。可要是不救或是再犹豫几分钟的话，那位老人就会死去。就在这千钧一发的时刻，他还是冒着可能被认出来的危险救下了老人。

又有一位老人，他被别人冤枉顶替冉阿让被捕。当身为“马德兰市长”的冉阿让知道后再一次犹豫了。因为他知道真正的冉阿让就是他自己!但如果他不承认的话，没有第二个人会知道。况且他还是一个了不起的“市长”。而那位老人只不过是个年过半百、毫无用处的人而已。可就在宣布那位老人有罪的时候，他竟公然承认自己就是冉阿让!为此他放弃了一切已得到的地位与荣华，以再一次进那已经呆了20_年的牢房为代价，救下了那位又是毫无血缘关系的人!

看到这里，我被深深地震撼了。与当时黑暗、丑恶的社会现象相对应的，竟是一颗如此善良、无私的心;以及那么高尚的道德品质。为了使一些陌生人不受到伤害，他竟然一次次地挺而走险，甚至甘愿付出自己的生命。要知道这是要付出多么巨大的勇气和力量啊!这一切都向我们展示了一个灵魂的高尚!

当然我也隐约地感到一层悲剧成分：在那样一个时代背景下，即使你再高尚、再伟大，在与命运、与社会丑恶现象的搏斗中总显得有点孤立、单薄。不过我认为就是这种差距悬殊的对抗，才更凸现出主人公冉阿让英雄的本色。

有一句话说的不错：时代造就英雄。我们从小也学过董存瑞、雷峰之类的英雄人物的高尚品德。可当今社会难道就不需要英雄了吗?答案是：人类需要发展，需要下一个英雄!然而他在哪儿?他又能告诉我们什么呢?

老师、家长总教导我们：我们是新世纪的人才和栋梁!而此话的言下之意则是：若干年后，世界的美好与和平就要靠我们去创造、维护了。

可在我看来，我们这代人还是相当自私、利己、冷漠、麻木的!什么青少年入室杀死八旬老太;什么骑车撞伤他人而逃之夭夭;什么看见伤者见死不救……都已经屡见不鲜了。而这些都是我们这一代人和整个社会都应该反省的!

“只要人人都献出一份爱，社会将变得更美好，世界将变得更和平!”但愿我们这一代人，能够不辜负祖国和人民的期望!

But what sort of companion could he be to those beautiful beings?
