1980年8月1日，国际游联恢复了中国合法席位，8月中旬在美国夏威夷举行的国际游泳比赛中，中国女运动员梁伟芬夺得100米蛙泳冠军。引起世人的瞩目。

1992年在巴塞罗那举行的第25届奥运会游泳比赛中，中国获4块金牌、5块银牌，并破两项世界纪录。其中林莉以2：11.65的成绩夺女子200米个人混合泳金牌，创世界纪录;杨文意以24.79的成绩获女子50米自由泳金牌，创世界纪录;庄泳获女子100米自由泳金牌;钱红获女子100米蝶泳金牌。这是我国首次在奥运会上获得游泳金牌。

进入21世纪后，中国游泳运动的发展水平逐渐提高。在2004年雅典奥运会和2008年奥运会游泳比赛中都夺得了奥运会游泳的金牌。在2009年罗马世界游泳锦标赛中，我国运动员张琳首次在世界游泳锦标赛中获得男子项目的金牌并打破世界纪录。在2011年的上海游泳世锦赛上，我国运动员孙杨获得800米和1500米自由泳2枚金牌，并打破了1500米世界纪录。2012年伦敦奥运会上，孙杨成为我国夺得奥运会男子游泳金牌的第一人，他取得400米和1500米自由泳2块金牌，并打破其自己保持的1500米世界纪录。近年来我国女子游泳运动员在世界大赛上也有不俗表现，叶诗文在伦敦奥运会上一举多得400米和200米个人混合泳2个冠军。

从1990北京亚运到2010年广州亚运，游泳这一个优势项目实现了超越。纵然在世界泳坛中国军团还处在追赶的地位，但在亚洲尤其是二十年前只有日本能与我们争锋，而1990年北京亚运会中国队利用东道主之利，凭借23金第一次压倒原来的亚洲游泳霸主日本队，之后98年曼谷日本夺回老大位置，06年多哈中日打成平手，而在2010年的广州中国以24金，超过1990年北京亚运会获得23枚金牌的历史最好成绩。
