有一次，苏格拉底正在和学生们讨论学术问题，互相争论的时候，他的妻子气冲冲地跑进来，把苏格拉底大骂了一顿之后，又出外提来一桶水，猛地泼到苏格拉底身上。

在场的学生们都以为苏格拉底会怒斥妻子一顿，哪知苏格拉底摸了摸浑身湿透的衣服，风趣地说：“我知道，打雷以后，必定会下大雨的。”

二、求知

一个青年问苏格拉底：“怎样才能获得知识？”

苏格拉底将这个青年带到海里，海水淹没了年轻人，他奋力挣扎才将头探出水面。苏格拉底问：“你在水里最大的愿望是什么？”

“空气，当然是呼吸新鲜空气！”

“对！学习就得使上这股子劲儿。”

三、教择偶

古希腊哲学大师苏格拉底的三个弟子曾求教老师，怎样才能找到理想的伴侣。苏格拉底没有直接回答，却让他们走麦田埂，只许前进，且仅给一次机会选摘一支最好最大的麦穗。

第一个弟子走几步看见一支又大又漂亮的麦穗，高兴地摘下了。但他继续前进时，发现前面有许多比他摘的那支大，只得遗憾地走完了全程。

第二个弟子吸取了教训，每当他要摘时，总是提醒自己，后面还有更好的。当他快到终点时才发现，机会全错过了。

第三个弟子吸取了前两位的教训，当他走到三分之一时，即分出大、中、小三类，再走三分之一时验证是否正确，等到最后三分之一时，他选择了属于大类中的一支美丽的麦穗。虽说，这不一定是最大最美的那一支，但他满意地走完了全程。
