土耳其《自由每日新闻》援引调查人员透露的信息报道称，袭击者当时身穿绿色衬衫、深色裤子和黑色靴子，是乘坐一辆出租车进入伊斯坦布尔的泽廷布尔努城区的。由于这家夜总会所在的街区交通堵塞严重，所以他从出租车上下来步行到了夜总会门前。凌晨1点20分左右，他被夜总会监控录像拍了下来，在进入夜总会之前还开枪打死了一名警察和一名平民。

调查人员还对该报透露，这名枪手在袭击过程中使用武器非常专业。他先到了夜总会的楼上，随后又下来。目击者说，即使是躺在地上的人也被他开枪击中头部而死亡。最后，他进入了夜总会的厨房并且逗留了13分钟左右，换了衣服之后离开，他的大衣留在了那里。

土耳其媒体还报道称，出了夜总会之后，他打了一辆出租车，但只搭乘了很短一段路程就下车了，因为他对出租车司机说，自己身上没有带钱。他的大衣留在了夜总会，口袋里装着500里拉的现金。之后这名袭击者去了哪里，就不得而知了。

血案发生的雷纳夜总会位于博斯普鲁斯海峡的欧洲一侧，是伊斯坦布尔的旅游者和当地名流喜爱光顾的娱乐场所。袭击发生时，夜总会内聚集了将近800人。伊斯坦布尔官方新年庆祝活动的举办地点据此仅几百米。为防范恐怖袭击，该市出动了1.7万名警察，整个市中心区处于高度戒备状态。
