Qing Dynasty emperors also used this place to hold audience and for other important ceremonies. The one on the east playing with a ball is a male, and ball is said to represent state unity. The other one is a female. Underneath one of its fore claws is a cub that is considered to be a symbol of perpetual imperial succession. The winding brook before us is the Golden Water River. It functions both as decoration and fire control .The five bridges spanning the river represent the five virtues preached by Confucius :benevolence, righteousness, rites, intellence and fidelity. The river takes the shape of a bow and the north-south axis is its arrow. This was meant to show that the Emperors ruled the country on behalf of God.

今天，我和妈妈专门去了牛街尽情品尝了甜香可口的老北京特色小吃。那里的小吃品种繁多，令人眼花缭乱，有艾窝窝，豌豆黄、糖卷果、奶酪魏……，哈哈！大家随我一起去品尝特色小吃吧！ 我们先来到了“牛街洪记小吃店”。饭店里人头攒动，吃饭的人还真不少。各种美味食品琳琅满目，我和妈妈点几份小吃。一会，驴打滚端上来了。驴打滚是椭圆形的，表面是土黄色。我迫不及待地夹了一块驴打滚送入口中，哇！味道好极了！吃到嘴里感到黏黏的，里面居然还是我爱吃的豆沙馅儿。我问妈妈：“这么好的驴打滚是怎么做的呀！”妈妈告诉我，外面是用黄豆面，里面裹着豆沙、红糖。妈妈还给我讲了有关它的历史故事呢！传说清朝老佛爷宫廷菜吃烦了，让御厨给她做一道新菜，御厨自己创新把黄米面里放上馅做成了菜。菜做完后正要端上的时候，太监小驴正巧撞到了御厨，新菜掉进了黄米面里。御厨重新做菜是来不及了，他只好把掉进黄米面里的新菜端给老佛爷品尝。谁知老佛爷还赞扬说：“这菜真不错，名字叫什么呀？”御厨想，这是小驴儿闯的祸，随口就说叫“驴打滚”由此驴打滚才得名。哈哈！这个故事有意思吧！

接着，服务员阿姨又给我们端上了一份小点心，名字叫艾窝窝。艾窝窝长得像一只雪白的小兔子，圆乎乎的。艾窝窝的味道那是相当的好，里面有各种各样的食物做成的馅，有桃仁、芝麻仁、瓜子仁、青梅、金糕、白糖……。看着看着，我的口水都流了出来了吃完艾窝窝了，不知道下一道点心是什么？正想着呢，一个黄色东西放在桌子上。呀！原来是豌豆啊！豌豆黄外表是黄色的，皮看起来非常光滑，吃到嘴里非常爽口，甜甜的。

走出“洪记小吃店”，妈妈又提议带我去吃“奶酪魏”的奶酪。说这可是有名的宫廷小吃。奶酪魏是一个不大的传统风格的小店，走进去墙上贴着各种口味奶酪的图片。我们点了两碗奶酪，一碗宫廷奶酪，一碗是黄奶酪。我的宫廷奶酪是白色的，我用勺子挖了一大勺放进嘴里。哇塞！太凉快了，一直凉到了心底，如果在炎热的夏天吃上一口，那一定爽口极了。

因为肚子容量实在有限，我不能把老北京的传统小吃一一品尝。怎么样，大家也一定吃饱了吧！下次再跟随我一道品尝老北京小吃吧！
