In my early years, I did not see the value of education.

When I was going on thirteen, I started to run my own shop. From then on, I worked hard to become a successful businessman.

One day I realized the importance of the English language in the business world and started taking night classes.

I was able to communicate well with foreign customers after two years of English study. But I started to feel that, in the long run, having a limited knowledge of English was not enough to make my business successful. I had only completed elementary school up to that point. I then went back to senior high school after four months of tutoring in different subjects. The important thing was getting into college.

I took the College Entrance Exams. Although my math exam result was only one point below the required score. I never gave up hope. The story of this colorful festival concerns a famous Chinese scholar-statesman(政治家) named Chu Yuan(屈原) who, some three centuries before the birth of Christ, served the King of Chu(楚怀王)during the Warring States period. As a loyal minister(大臣), Chu Yuan at first enjoyed the full confidence and respect of his sovereign(君主). Eventually, through the intrigues of his rivals, he was discredited(不足信的, 不名誉的).

Chu Yuan was never able to regain(恢复) the emperors favor and on the fifth day of the fifth moon in the year 295 B.C.(Before Christ), at the age of 37, Chu Yuan clasped a stone to his chest and plunged into the Milo River(汨罗江) in the Hunan Province(湖南省).

They wrapped(包) rice in bamboo leaves(粽叶), and stuffed(填满) it with ham, beans, bean paste(豆沙), salted egg yokes, sausages, nuts, and/or vegetables.

To the Chinese the fifth lunar moon is more than just the Dragon Boat Festival. Since antiquity(古代), they have believed that this month is a pestilential and danger-fraught(瘟疫的及充满危险的) period. Children born in this month are said to be difficult to raise(抚养), and people tend to concentrate their efforts during this time attempting to protect their families from ills and misfortune. The day of the Dragon Boat Festival is customarily the time when cleaning and sanitation(卫生) are stressed(着重, 强调). Most families hang calamus(菖蒲) and artemisia(艾草) above their doors, both as a decoration and as a preventive against pestilence.

Ancient folk medicines(民间药物) such as realgar(雄黄酒)are added to the food eaten on the Festival day. This is believed to prevent disease and to promote a healthy digestive system(消化器官). The drinking of realgar in wine supposedly relieves(解除) the effects of poisons accumulated in human bodies.

Born into a poor farmers family in a mountainous area and educated in relatively primitive surroundings, I found myself lagging far behind in the first class in college, which happened to be Ms. Zhangs English class. I was really discouraged and frustrated, so I decided to drop out. Ms. Zhang was so keenly insightful that she had noticed my embarrassment in class. After class, she called me into the Teachers Room and discussed the situation with me, earnestly and kindly, citing the example of Robinson Crusoe to motivate me to go ahead in spite of all kinds of difficulties. "Be a man and rely on yourself," she nudged me. The next time we met, she brought me a simplified version of Robinson Crusoe and recommended that I finish reading it in a week and write a book report. Under her consistent and patient guidance, not only has my English been greatly improved, but my confidence and courage enhanced considerably.

"Rely on yourself and be a man," Ms. Zhangs inspiring words have been echoing in my mind. I will work harder and try my utmost to lay a solid foundation for my future career. Only by so doing can I repay Ms. Zhangs kindness and live up to her expectations of me, that is, to become a useful person and contribute to society.

Last week, I took part in an English speech contest which was held by our teachers. There were twelve students in the final contest. I was one of them.

Fifteen minutes before my turn, I picked my topic and prepared for it. I wrote down the outlines and organized what I was going to say. However, when I stood in front of all judges and students, I was extremely nervous. My mind was totally empty.

Then I took a deep breath to relax myself and started my speech. The result was not as good as I expected, but I preferred to regard it as a challenge to myself, whose process was the most important for me. I can learn a lot from this contest. I am sure I will be better next time.

Today, more and more young people are crazy about western festivals. When western festivals come, they usually go to restaurants or shopping malls to have fun.

如今，越来越多的年轻人都对西方的节日着迷。当西方节日到来的时候，他们常常去餐厅或是商场娱乐。

Why do the young enjoy western festivals so much? Since they worship everything new, and they can’t resist the temptation. In their opinions, western festivals symbolize the fashion, while our Chinese traditional festivals are out of date. No wonder we always feel so boring during our traditional holidays. If we still turn a blind eye to our traditional festivals, our culture and civilization will disappear someday. Accordingly, it is high time for us to pay close attention to our Chinese festivals.

为什么年轻人这么喜爱西方节日呢?大抵是因为他们喜爱新鲜事物，抗拒不了诱惑。在他们看来，西方节日代表着时尚，而中国传统节日则太土了。这也难怪我们也觉得我们的传统节日太过无聊了。如果我们对传统节日漠然置之，那么某天我们的文化文明终会消失。因此，我们该多多关注我们中国自己的节日了。

As a Chinese, we have the obligation to protect our culture and custom. So I think we should celebrate our Chinese festivals by doing some traditional activities. As for western festivals, we needn’t to be too excited about them. We can just send our best wishes to our best friends during those festivals.

作为一名中国人，我们有责任保护自己的文化习俗。所以我认为应当在庆祝中国传统节日时候举办一些传统活动。而对于西方节日，我们不需要太过激动。在这些节日里我们应该只需简单的送上祝福就好。

DragonBoatFestival, often known as Tuen Ng Festival or Duan Wu Festival, is a traditional Chinese festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month of the Chinese calendar. It is also known as the Double Fifth.[citation needed] It has since been celebrated, in various ways, in other parts of East Asia as well, most notably Korea.

The exact origins of Duan Wu are unclear, but one traditional view holds that the festival memorializes the Chinese poet Qu Yuan of the Warring States Period. He committed suicide by drowning himself in a river because he was disgusted by the corruption of the Chu government. The local people, knowing him to be a good man, decided to throw food into the river to feed the fishes to prevent them from eating Qus body. They also sat on dragon boats, and tried to scare the fishes away by the thundering sound of drums aboard the boat and the fierce looking dragon-head in the front of the boat.

In the early years of the Chinese Republic, Duan Wu was also celebrated as "Poets Day", due to Qu Yuans status as Chinas first poet of personal renown.

Today, people eat zongzi (the food originally intended to feed the fishes) and race dragon boats in memory of Qus dramatic death.

May Day that day, I meet my brother and younger brother to play in the riverside wetland park. Im very glad to get off when Im singing while jumping down.

So many people in the park! Some fly a kite, some play in the water, and watch the scenery. My favorite is the reeds. The green reeds sway in the wind, as if to welcome us; There were a few wild duck in the reeds, swam to busy to catch fish and shrimp eat; Little dragonfly fly tired, fell on the reeds, pointed to rest!

The park is really fun, we had a happy May Day.

五一节这天，我相约哥哥和弟弟去滨河湿地公园玩。我非常高兴，下车时我是一边哼着歌一边蹦下去的。

公园里的人真多哪!有的放风筝、有的在水边玩耍、还有的观赏风景。我最喜欢的就是芦苇荡。绿油油的芦苇荡随风摇摆，好像是在欢迎我们的到来;还有几只野鸭在芦苇丛中游来游去，正忙着捉鱼虾吃;小蜻蜓飞累了，落在芦苇尖上休息呢!

公园里可真好玩，我们过了个快乐的五一节。

There are many festivals in a year, I love Children’s day, because on that day, I can have many candies from school.

In the school, I will play many games, there will be no class on Children’s day, everybody will have fun.

Children’s day is my favorite day, the day belongs to me. I enjoy that day so much. My parents will also celebrate it for me.
