首先，心理健康教育与思想政治教育有着共同的教育使命，两者的进一步融合是大学生全面健康发展的客观需求。尽管各有侧重点，但心理健康教育和思想政治教育同属于精神领域工作，并且有着共同的教育对象———具有独立人格和主观能动性的青年学生个体。同时，心理健康教育与思想政治教育都以提升大学生综合素养、促进大学生成长成才为目标。共同的教育目标是二者融合的前提之一。此外，当代高等教育培养的是全能人才，过硬的综合素养是大学生全面发展的重要标志。与科学文化素质、思想道德素质一样，心理健康素质也是大学生综合素质的重要组成成分。只有切实提升大学生的心理承受力、社会适应力，才有可能培养出道德高尚、体质强健、心理健康、文化素养过硬的社会主义接班人。其次，心理健康教育与思想政治教育可以在内容上互为补充、相互促进。作为两个相对独立的学科，思想政治教育侧重对学生的爱国主义、集体主义及马列思想基本理论的教育;心理健康教育侧重开发学生的心理潜能、解决学生的心理问题。二者虽各有侧重，却并不是完全分离的，它们不但有着共同关心的问题，也都属于人的精神领域和意识范畴，具有相互渗透的基础条件。方法上，心理健康教育更为系统，操作性更强，更有利于发挥学生的主观能动性，值得高校在思想政治教育中学习借鉴。
二、以创新思维发掘心理健康教育与思想政治教育的融合点
1.转变教育理念
以往高校的思想政治教育对学生的个性与能力不够重视，一味地向学生灌输道德规范和知识。在缺乏人文关怀的背景下，心理健康教育被理解成一种专门治疗心理疾病、只面向少数病态学生的特殊教育形式。对此，必须转变教育思想，摈弃学生不正确的理解，树立起以人为本、服务学生的思想政治教育理念。此外，既不可有意地将思想政治教育与心理健康教育割裂开来，也不要简单地将它们混为一谈。要客观地看待思想政治教育和心理健康教育的内在联系，利用它们互为推动、互为补充的深层关系促进两者的共同发展;二要尊重思想政治教育和心理健康教育作为独立学科的特异性。只有这样，才能在不影响二者有效融合的前提下真正发挥出各自独有的教育优势。

心理健康教育与思想政治教育的融合是一项长期、系统的工程，离不开工作机制的支持与保障。对此，高校需要积极探索出有利于心理健康教育与思想政治教育融合的长效工作机制。同时，要进一步促进高校心理健康教育教师与思想政治教育教师队伍的融合互动，完善心理健康教育与思想政治教育组织机构和领导体制，为两者的深度融合创造制度、人力及物质上的保障。
3.改革教育手法
心理健康教育与思想政治教育所采用的方法既有共同点，也存在差异。应在保留两种方法各自优势的同时以相互借鉴的方式探索出更多共同适应于二者的方式方法。对此，心理健康教育要充分借鉴思想政治教育的教育思维和宏观视野，变被动为主动，将个体的受教育对象发展普及到广大学生群体之中。要充分发挥课堂教学在心理健康教育中的正面作用，认真挖掘潜在的心理健康教育方式，逐步形成集课内教育与课外教育于一体、融教育与自我教育于一身的大学生心理健康教育体系。同时，思想政治教育要有意识地摆脱说教式的方式。即要尽快建立起集启发、渗透、集中教育于一体的教育方法体系。在教育过程中，不应忽视不同学生在个性、气质及心理特征上的差异，尽可能做到因材施教。
三、以内容渠道拓展心理健康教育与思想政治教育融合的针对性
1.强化政治方向引领
当代大学生成长在一个多元化的社会中，不同文化的冲击容易动摇他们对社会主义理想信念的信心。信仰的迷失和价值观的嬗变让青年学生在对自身的过度关注日趋功利化，继而精神萎靡、思想空虚。而这种心态特点无疑会打破大学生原本稳定的心理结构，并引发他们种种心理问题和行为失范。思想问题和心理问题是交织产生、相互关联的。一个人的心理问题能够在侧面反映出这个人的人生观、世界观及价值观;反之，一个人是否三观端正又多少少少决定了这个人能否有一个健康的心理。从这个角度看，想要保证心理健康教育与思想政治教育的融合效果，强化其在大学生群体中的影响力，就必须紧跟时代节奏、尊重大学生心理与思想之实际，不断强化对他们的政治引领。这就是说，在大学生思想政治及心理健康教育中，要始终坚持以马列主义为根本指引，引导学生了解党的基本理论、路线及纲领。同时，还要在此基础上积极展开革命教育、国情教育以及科学发展观教育，帮助学生认清国家命运、坚定政治方向、明确自身责任，从而树立起正确的人生观、世界观和价值观，寻求到自身价值与社会需求间的平衡点。
2.坚持情理交融
