Nevertheless, MCEA, with more than 70 members, will continue to actively promote

bilingual Chinese education in the Palo Alto public schools and will keep you

apprised of the progress we make.

有两则关于同一条英语谚语Blood is thicker than water的译例。其一是“清水不浓血却浓”，其二是“血浓于水”。从字面上看，上述两则译例译得固然不错，似无可厚非。译文读起来很顺，又比较易懂，但读后似有不知所云之感。

这是因为译文的形象没能准确地传达出这条谚语的喻义来。

Longman Dictionary of English Idioms（p.28）上对这条谚语的解释是“The relationship between people of the same family is stronger than other，relationships”因此，这则谚语似可以借用汉语中一句俗语“亲不亲一家人”来译更能表达出“属于同一血缘关系的一家人比别人更亲近一些”的寓意。

语言是文化的表现形式。谚语同文学作品、诗歌一样是语言的精华。英语谚语是富于色彩的语言形式，一般具有生动形象、喻义明显、富于哲理的语言特征。在一定程度上，英语谚语反映了英语民族的文化特点。因此，翻译英语谚语时，仅仅以语言之间词汇的同义性（等价性）为前提，寻求对等的表现是不够的。译者须较多运用汉语的表现手段，力求能再现英语谚语的语言风格和丰富内涵。只有多注意英语谚语字面以外所特有的语言内涵色彩，才能使译文讽喻得当，宜于说理，又不失原来谚语所具有的语言形象。

某些英语谚语和汉语成语、俗语在表现形式和含义方面是一致的或基本一致的。汉译这些英语时，可惜用与其喻义相同或相近的成语或谚语及俗语直接对译。这样不但可以比较好地保持原文的神韵和形式，又使译文易于为读者或听者接受。如：

Pride comes before a fall．骄兵必败。

Amiss is as good as a mile.差之毫厘，失之千里。

Two is company，but three is none.两个和尚抬水吃，三个和尚无水吃。

Walls have ear.隔墙有耳。

Enough is as good as a feast．知足常乐。

有些英语谚语虽然在语言习惯和文化背景方面和其相对的汉语谚语之间存在着某些差异，而且所比喻的事物并不一样，但他们的喻义却相互吻合，而且表达方式也很相似，汉译这些英语谚语时，常常需要“易其形式，存其精神”，即采用形象近似的汉语成语意译。这样可使译文既喻义明显，又含而不露，且可再现原文所具有的语言效果，容易达意。如：

Two can play the game.孤掌难鸣。

Newbroom sweeps clean.新官上任三把火。

Speak of the devil，and he appears.说曹操，曹操到。

The grass is greener on the other side of the hill．这山望着那山高。

Putting the cart before the horse.本末倒置。

有些英语谚语意在言外，语言含蓄，寓意深刻。如果仅从字面意义直译成汉语，而不领会原文的具体含义及其效果，译文势必平淡无味。这样既不能表达意思，又有损于原文的语言形象和丰富内涵。因此，在翻译时，应在汉语中寻找那些与原文喻义相同或效果相似的成语、谚语或俗语来表达，则会使译文形象生动，准确达意。试比较下列各译例。

People who live in glass houses should not throw stones.如译成“住在玻璃房子里的人，不应扔石头”不如译成“己有过，勿正人”或“责人必先责己”。

In fair weather prepare for the foul．如译成“晴天要防阴天”，不如译成“有备无患”或“居安思危”或“未雨绸缪”。

Murder will out．如译成“谋杀终必败露”，不如译成“纸包不住火”。

Fools rush in where angels fear to tread．如译成“愚者敢闯天使不敢去的地方”，不如译成“初生牛犊不怕虎”。

One cannot make an omelette without breaking eggs.如译成“想吃煎蛋卷，就得打鸡蛋”，不如译成工“有得必有失”或甚至可以引申为“不破不立”。

如果所要翻译的谚语喻义清新，形象逼真，按其字面直译其意，就能表达出原文的喻义来，则可直译。这样做既能较完整地保存原文的表达方式，且又可丰富我们自己的语言文化，一举两得，请看下面的译例。

God helps those who help themselves.上帝帮助那些自己帮助自己的人。或“自助者天助之”。

Money is the root of all evil．金钱是万恶之源。

An empty sack cannot stand upright．空袋立不直。

Do as you would be done by. 以你所期望的别人待你的方式待人。

这与另一谚语： Don’t do unto others what you don’t want others do unto you.“己所不欲勿施于人”很相似。

Money talks.钱能通神。

有些英语谚语常常采用对称的修辞手段。使用这一修辞手段的目的在于加强语势，宜于说理，读后有心悦诚眼之感。汉译这些谚语时，应适当注意保持其修辞色彩，以便体现原文的表达方式。如：

You may take a horse to the water， but you can’t make it drink．

如果按字面译成，“你可以把马牵到河边去，但不能叫它饮水”至少是没有充分体现这句谚语本身所具有的强烈对比色彩。从语法分析的观点看，在这个句子里，情态动词may和can虽然都表示“可能”的，但在含义上有所不同。这里may表示“事实上的可能性”，而can则表示“逻辑上的可能性”。并列连词but使前后两个分句意义相反，对比色彩强烈。在这种情况下，译文也必须力求对偶整齐，前后呼应，形成对照。如将此句译作“牵马河边易，逼它饮水难”或“老牛不喝水，不能强按头”会更好些。

总之，即使像谚语这样孤立的语句，翻译时也需尽一番揣摩切磋之功，否则译文就可能与原文“貌合神离”，文不达意。译事艰辛也许正在于此。

要说吃月饼，我最爱吃姥姥做的月饼了。每年中秋节，姥姥都会自制一些月饼，分给亲戚和邻居们吃，提前半个多月，姥姥就开始忙活了。

周日去姥姥家，正赶上姥姥准备做月饼。就见姥姥从冰箱中依次拿出花生米、核桃仁、松子仁等馅料。姥姥先把这些馅料放在一个容器里，用木棰轻轻捣碎，倒在一个小盆里，再把芝麻、葡萄干、果脯丁、红糖倒入，搅拌均匀，月饼馅料在姥姥灵巧的双手下像变魔术般很快就拌好了。接着，姥姥用食用油、鸡蛋，白糖来和面。姥姥用的月饼模具是鲤鱼形状的，听姥姥说，这个模具是姥爷亲手刻制的，它的年龄比妈妈还要大。

姥姥让我帮忙把面先搓成长条，再切成一个个的小圆柱体，然后把小圆柱体按扁备用。她拿起一个按扁的小圆柱体，擀成薄饼状，把月饼馅料填进去，捏住口，然后放入月饼模具，用力向下压，之后倒扣在案板上，一个鲤鱼形状的月饼就成型了!等全部制作完后，把它们放入烤箱中烤制，大约25分钟左右，满屋子就都飘着月饼的香味了。

我迫不及待地拿起一个咬一口，啊，外皮酥酥的，果仁脆脆的，甜中裹着芝麻的香味，好吃的无以伦比。

我告诉姥姥，用苹果、香蕉、猕猴桃调配上果酱，这样可以做成水果馅月饼，姥姥采纳了我这个建议，吃着外皮酥酥，内馅软软的水果馅月饼，姥姥直夸我聪明，有创意。

再过几天，就是咱们中国的传统节日——中秋佳节。月饼将成为主角登场，象征团圆，其饼如月，团圆美满。

而我今天要说的中秋砸月饼，则是我童年记忆中的趣事，在童年谁家的孩子能单独吃一个囫囵月饼，那是会被同伴们视为一种奢侈的表现而遭妒忌。或许那年月，是因为很多人都吃不饱饭，或许是因为肚子里油水少，加之月饼非寻常点心，在我的印象中，那时的月饼似乎是好吃的东西。

如今，总会听到有人说，现在的月饼不如以前的好吃，就我个人的体会，那时的月饼不是太好吃。只是那年月的人经常吃不饱肚子的缘故。不过，那时的月饼“质量”是相当的“好”，由于没有保质期，一个月饼放半年六个月，一点不会变质。而最大的特点就是“硬”，硬到什么程度？

在我的记忆里，小时候只用锤子砸过两种食品，一是榨过油的花生饼，另一个就是月饼。砸月饼，因为要与兄弟分享月饼，但力小又掰不开，刀又切不动。最后只好用锤子砸，砸开的月饼在当时完全可以用来磨牙的，牙口不好，想大口吃砸开的月饼，那是根本不可能的。可以说，那个年月的月饼是很少被浪费的。

记不清从什么时候开始，月饼已经不再是传统意义的月饼，什么天价月饼，黄金月饼、甚至打着无糖月饼的旗号，无所不用至极。但是却并不好吃，不是过甜，就是太腻，什么香精、色素、添加剂等，基本上吃不到原生态的味道。说好听一点儿，也就是一种新式点心，说不好听的，纯粹就是拿我们大众胃口开涮。

因此，每逢中秋吃月饼，我都会想到少年时中秋砸月饼的趣事。

值此，建国60周年之际，又逢中秋佳节之时，回忆作文以记之，祝朋友们快乐团员，幸福永远。

The winter vacation, we came to Harbin, mom and Dad took us to the Yabuli ski resort.

Chinese New Year or Spring Festival  the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It  sometimes called the "Lunar New Year" by Englh speakers. The festival traditionally begins on the first day of the first month (Chinese: 正月; pinyin: zhēng yuè) in the Chinese calendar and ends on the 15th; th day  called Lantern Festival. Chinese New Years Eve  known as chú xī. It literally means "Year-pass Eve".

Chinese New Year  the longest and most important festivity in the Lunar Calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year  itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Ancient Chinese New Year  a reflection on how the people behaved and what they believed in the most.

Celebrated in areas with large populations of ethnic Chinese, Chinese New Year  considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors, as well as cultures with whom the Chinese have had extensive interaction. These include Koreans (Seollal), Tibetans and Bhutanese (Losar), Mongolians (Tsagaan Sar), Vietnamese (Tt), and formerly the Japanese before 1873 (Oshogatsu). Outside of Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, Chinese New Year  also celebrated in countries with significant Han Chinese populations, such as Singapore, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Thailand. In countries such as Australia, Canada and the United States, although Chinese New Year  not an official holiday, many ethnic Chinese hold large celebrations and Australia Post, Canada Post, and the US Postal Service sues New Years themed stamps.

Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration, material, food, and clothing. It  also the tradition that every family thoroughly cleans the house to sweep away any ill-fortune in hopes to make way for good incoming luck. Windows and doors will be decorated with red colour paper-cuts and couplets with popular themes of “happiness”, “wealth”, and “longevity”. On the Eve of Chinese New Year, supper  a feast with families. Food will include such items as pigs, ducks, chicken and sweet delicacies. The family will end the night with firecrackers. Early the next morning, children will greet their parents by whing them a healthy and happy new year, and receive money in red paper envelopes. The Chinese New Year tradition  a great way to reconcile forgetting all grudges, and sincerely wh peace and happiness for everyone.

Although the Chinese calendar traditionally does not use continuously numbered years, outside China its years are often numbered from the reign of Huangdi. But at least three different years numbered 1 are now used by various scholars, making the year 2009 "Chinese Year" 4707, 4706, or 4646.

我最爱的是牛肉月饼。

它闻起来香香的，好像在闻一块牛排似的，我真想一口就把它吃进肚子里啊！它摸起来滑滑的，就像摸一块丝绸一样，柔柔的，手感很好。它看起来很像一朵花，中间写着“牛肉”两个字。凸起的地方是焦黄焦黄的，凹下去的地方是像蜂蜜那种的黄，可真漂亮。而且，月饼的表面也是有很多图案。轻轻咬一下，棕色的馅露出来了，美味可口，仿佛全身都要被这美味融化。只需要一点点儿，在舌间蔓延开来，你就会陶醉在这美味中。不一会儿，这块月饼就会被吃光，这时候，你就会感觉满嘴都是香味。所以，我这喜欢牛肉月饼。

月饼，是中秋佳节必备的食物，是久负盛名的汉族传统小吃，它深受中国人民喜爱的传统节日特色美食。

走在大街小巷，看到那些地方都有着月饼的身影。圆圆的样子，看起来还是有点可爱。月饼是个点心，在人们的眼中，月饼仿佛就是应该在中秋吃一样。我觉得不是这样的，什么时候，只要你喜欢，你就可以去品尝它。

月饼的种类很多，它的味道也有很多。在我的记忆中，有红枣味、五仁、黑芝麻、豆沙等味道。我喜欢吃的当然是红枣味的了，说起吃枣味的突然间又想起了奶奶做的月饼。那个味道真的是不错的，直到现在我还有点怀念。但是永远吃不到了，只有自己去街上买点月饼了。

看着书桌上的月饼，静静的躺在那里。我的内心是沉淀的，为什么这么说呢？因为圆圆的月饼也象征的团团圆圆，我一个人没有回去，没有一点点中秋的气息。但是我能说什么呢？自己多少年没有回去了！不是不想家，而是早已经习惯。

中秋的月饼味道早已经在我的嘴里咀嚼，是啊！有一种温馨的味道。这是多么的完美，也是多么的回味。

Viewing vs.Reading

The pace of reading, clearly,depends entirely upon the reader. He may read

as slowly or as rapidly as he can or wishes to read. If he does not understand

今天是星期六下午，我们去了一个豪华的蛋糕房，叫做“简?爱遇见你”。我们的任务是一项好玩的活动――做月饼。

我们来到“简?爱遇见你”之后，发现那牌子是白底粉字，橱窗上陈列着各种蛋糕。我们一进到屋子中，好凉快呀!这凉快的感觉之中还有一股浓浓的香气。

制作室中摆着各种机器――虽然我不知道那都是什么。然后，我们通过“密道”进来了一个“密室”。“密道”的后面有一张很大很大的长桌子，那就是我们完成任务的场地。

师傅姓张，穿着灰色的衣服，看起来精神抖擞!张师傅拿起一个大盘子给我们发了面团和枣泥。那枣泥好像一团巧克力啊!我首先把枣泥和面团都弄成了团子，然后把面放在了手上。我拍，我拍，我拍拍拍!哈哈!我要让全班人知道你是怎么臣服于我手心之中的。不久，毫无破绽的团子被我拍成了一个毫无破绽的饼子。我又把“巧克力”放在了我的饼子中间。好，现在我用面把馅儿包了起来。我又把它们揉成了团。最后一步，我用“定型机”一摁一提，一个半成功的月饼好了!

As more and more students graduated from universities and colleges, youth employment is becoming a problem in our society. Nowadays, many young people are having a hard time finding jobs. They often faced the "No experience, no job - no job, no experience" dilemma.

To solve the problem of youth employment, I think the government should take some measures to help college students who are finding their jobs. The House of 1000 Mirrors 千镜屋 Long ago in a small, faraway village, there was a place known as the House of 1000 Mirrors. A small, happy little dog learned of this place and decided to visit. 很久以前的一个很远的小村庄里，有一个以"千镜屋"而著名的地方。一个乐观的小狗听说了这个地方并决定去参观。

When he arrived, he hounced happily up the stairs to the doorway of the house. He looked through the doorway with his ears lifted high and his tail wagging as fast as it could.
