The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902)， a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in his adopted state and throughout the United States when he served as President Grover Clevelands Secretary of Agriculture. More than one million trees were planted. A second Arbor Day took place in 1884 and the young state made it an annual legal holiday in 1885, using April 22nd to coincide with Mortons birthday.

In the years following that first Arbor Day, Mortons idea spread beyond Nebraska with Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota and Ohio all proclaiming their own Arbor Days. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate. Arbor Day is also now celebrated in other countries including Australia. 我和哥哥找到一个地方，妈妈用锄头挖了个坑，哥哥把树苗放进去，我也紧紧扶着小树苗，生怕小树苗倒下。我用铁铲给小树苗填土。填呀填，树坑里的土填满了。树苗已经稳稳当当地站住了。哥哥用脚把土踩紧，我再把水慢慢地倒进土里，树苗喝饱了水，好像变得更茁壮了。

只要我们人人都植一棵树，那我们的地球妈妈将变得更加美丽。明年，我还要来植树!
