In today's society, more and more adults return to the university, sit in the classroom, open the textbook again in order to further their education. What they study involves a lot of subjectsnot only English and computer used in all trades as tools, but also more professional ones such as MBA courses. Different from thecollegestudentswho may know little aboutwhat they'll major in the college before they are engaged in it, the adults make their choices for some simple and definite reasons, which can be roughly classified into three groups, the requirement of the job market, the desire for higher salary and the need for entertainment and relaxation.

In the era characterized of rapid development of technology,it is not so easy to find or to secure a job for the intense competition. As a result, adults feel what they studied in school is far from enough to deal with the work in hand. Thus, "to charge the battery" is listed into schedule by more and more people. For example, Mr. Wang, an accountant in a big company, suddenly realized it was too hard for him to understand technical terms coming from his young colleagues. And worst of all, they ap

peared in the program of their new business. So, firmly, he entered for a weekend course on accountancy for a further degree.

But in some cases, people prefer reeducation just for money, which partly results from the professional job title system in China. Although virtually unrelated to people's own jobs, a few certificates are fervently pursued by some middle aged men and women just because they are the criteria for a higher title, which means some one hundred Yuan or so will be added to their salary. So it's the eagerness to grasp money rather than to study render them to return to the class.

It is true that severe pressure of making a living stirs some people to pursue further education. However, this is not the case as far as another group of people are concerned. These people, with domestic and occupational stability, feel a lack of interest in their life. So, they turn to some courses such as music and arts and literature, which may be their childhood dream. Education of this type can relax their nerves, make them more graceful and their life more colorful.

Mainly for the three reasons mentioned above, an increasingly large number of adults in modern society came back to classroom after they stepped out of the campus.Whatever reasons lead to their reeducation, our society benefits a lot from the endeavor of these adults. To name just a few, the workers' quality improves, and the income of education industry increascs... And more people are continuing to join the team of adult learners.By the way,if youpay a little attention to your parents, you'll probably find a brand new College English Course which you have just finished is on his or her desk now.

Worldsmileday

As is well known by now throughout the world Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. That image went on to become the most recognizable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet.

As the years passed Harvey Ball became concerned about the over-commercialization of his symbol, and how its original meaning and intent had become lost in the constant repetition of the marketplace. Out of that concern came his idea for World Smile Day. He thought that we, all of us, should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts throughout that world. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion. Harvey’s idea was that for at least one day each year, neither should we. He declared that the first Friday in October each year would henceforth be World Smile Day.

The very first World Smile Day took place in Worcester, MA on October 1, 1999. What a celebration it was! State and local dignitaries gathered and read proclamations in support of the day. Another proclamation recognizing the day was read on the floor of the United States Congress and is now part of the Congressional Record, the reporter of the official proceedings of the US Congress. Thousands of Worcester school children created World Smile Day® cards that were then delivered to area hospitals and nursing homes. The event became national and even international news.

The US Postal service came to Worcester that day to unveil its new Smiley Face stamp design. And, the Postal Service issued a special cancellation just for that event. Each year since then the USPS has issued a different cancellation commemorating the day.

In his inaugural address on that very first World Smile Day Harvey Ball laid the groundwork for that World Smile Day saying that the smiley face “…just reflects what is inside every one of us – a smile is what we want to see when we look at another human being.” He said, “Sometimes we forget that. Sometimes the world seems big and filled with problems that are too hard to understand much less solve. We start to believe that we are too small to make a difference. But that’s not true. The truth is that every one of us has the ability to make a difference every day.”

Harveys hometown of Worcester, MA has been and continues to be the epicenter for World Smile Day.

Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

The worlds environment is surprisingly healthy. Discuss. If that were an examination topic, most students would tear it apart, offering a long list of complaints: from local smog(烟雾)to global climate change, from the felling(砍伐)of forests to the extinction of species. The list would largely be accurate, the concern legitimate. Yet the students who should be given the highest marks would actually be those who agreed with the statement. The surprise is how good things are, not how bad.

After all, the worlds population has more than tripled during this century, and world output has risen hugely, so you would expect the earth itself to have been affected. Indeed, if people lived, consumed and produced things in the same way as they did in 1900 , the world by now would be a pretty disgusting place: smelly, dirty, toxic and dangerous.

But they dont. The reasons why they dont, and why the environment has not been ruined, have to do with prices, technological innovation, social change and government regulation in response to popular pressure. That is why todays environmental problems in the poor countries ought, in principle, to be solvable.

Raw materials have not run out, and show no sign of doing so. Logically, one day they must: the planet is a finite place. Yet it is also very big, and man is very ingenious. What has happened is that every time a material seems to be running short, the price has risen and, in response, people have looked for new sources of supply, tried to find ways to use less of the materials, or looked for a new substitute. For this reason prices for energy and for minerals have fallen in real terms during the century. The same is true for food. Prices fluctuate, in response to harvests, natural disasters and political instability; and when they rise, it takes some time before new sources of supply become available. But they always do, assisted by new farming and crop technology. The long-term trend has been downwards.

reading classics have significant implication for a person’s development. a sea of classic books are usually written by a lot of well-known folks. different kinds of books tell us their own special subjects, which teach us how to effectively do our jobs, carry out problems from different parts and do a successful man.

recently people who tend to read classics are shrinking, while in the past classic staff had a large popularity for all kinds of individuals. why does this phenomenon come out? the reason for this problem is from many aspects, mainly as follows.

the first reason is that people do not have enough time to read and reluctant to spend their valuable time in books. as the economic development is becoming increasingly fast, a multitude of characters surge into their money. in order to earn more incomes, they kill their all time in their jobs, and they even don’t want to take a little of their all time to read. the second reason for causing this phenomenon is next.

nowadays piracy books become growing popular, especially classics. this problem, to some extent, affects people’s moods and interests of reading classics. so a wealth of individuals of reading classics turn to dramatically shrinking.

from my own perspective, we, as college students, should read all kinds of books, including classics, to develop our own comprehensive and perfect knowledge. we should pay attention to the content of books, not the paper quality of books.

With the development scientific technology and the improvement of people’s life standard, a growing number of e-books have been available for the readers. Therefore, some people hold the idea that e-books will replace traditional books in the future, because the former is more advantageous than the latter, such as more convenient and less expensive.

However, as far as I am concerned, e-books will not and cannot replace traditional books. First, compared with traditional books, we cannot get the same pleasure from reading e-books in that e-books are easier to make our eyes to be tired and dry when reading. Second, with concern about copyright, there are many books are not available in digital form, especially classics. In other words, the resource of e-books is quite limited and cannot satisfy the readers. Third, there is a function of traditional books that e-books do not have—as a gift and a collection. I suppose that those who love reading would be willing to keep a printed form even though he has read the electronic form of it.

In a word, traditional books will continue to be the most important form in our reading.

Reading Selectively or Extensively?

How should we read? Should we read selectively or extensively? Answers to the question may vary from person to person.

Some people think we should read selectively. They argue that with the development of modern science and technology, more and more books are published every day. It is impossible for us to read all the books. What’s more, there are many bad books that are poisonous to our mind, and that we shouldn’t read. Since we can’t read all the books, and we shouldn’t read bad books, we must read selectively.

But others may not agree. They emphasize that the present society is not what it used to be. If you want to be successful, you must read widely and acquire knowledge in both natural sciences and humanities. If you are learned in one field but ignorant in others, you may not amount to much. Since we must have many kinds of knowledge, we must read extensively.

Who’s right? There is a lot to be said for both sides of the argument. However, I think we should read extensively first and then learn deeply about the subject we are interested in.
