唐代初步形成了中秋节，但是这时候人们过中秋节主要是饮酒赏月，没见到关于中秋节拜月的记载。宋代中秋节有了拜月的民间习俗，不过当时的拜月在中秋节习俗中并不重要，也不普遍，仪式远不如后世郑重。根据目前所见资料，宋代拜月主要是少男少女对月祝祷、许愿。据宋代金盈之所写的《新编醉翁谈录》卷四“八月 ”记载："中秋，京师赏月之会，异于他郡。倾城人家子女，不以贫富，自能行至十二三，皆以成人之服饰之，登楼或于中庭焚香拜月，各有所期：男则愿早步蟾宫，高攀仙桂，……女则澹伫妆饰，则愿貌似嫦娥，员（圆）如皓月"。
