当地的方言是淘，闽南方言，也叫Hokkien。Amoy被广泛的使用和理解在福建省南部地区以及海外。虽然它是在厦门被广泛使用，厦门方言没有官方地位，及所有政府业务的官方语言是普通话。

厦门和它周围的地区是闻名的风景和绿树成荫的海滩。顾朗宇，也被称为钢琴之岛，是一个受欢迎的周末的城市美景和特点的许多维多利亚时代风格的欧洲建筑。厦门植物园是一个自然爱好者的天堂。佛教南普陀寺，可以追溯到唐代，是国家的宝贵财富。厦门也是著名的历史在中国内战与台湾Jinmen一线(也被称为Jinmen或金门岛)50年前，一个吸引人的地方是游客看金门，一组岛屿几公里远，在台湾的控制，从厦门岛。
