The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902)， a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in his adopted state and throughout the United States when he served as President Grover Clevelands Secretary of Agriculture. But his most important legacy is Arbor Day.

Morton (photo, right) felt that Nebraskas landscape and economy would benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees. He set an example himself planting orchards, shade trees and wind breaks on his own farm and he urged his neighbours to follow suit. Mortons real opportunity, though, arrived when he became a member of Nebraskas state board of agriculture. He proposed that a special day be set aside dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees. Nebraskas first Arbor Day was an amazing success. More than one million trees were planted. A second Arbor Day took place in 1884 and the young state made it an annual legal holiday in 1885, using April 22nd to coincide with Mortons birthday.

In the years following that first Arbor Day, Mortons idea spread beyond Nebraska with Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota and Ohio all proclaiming their own Arbor Days. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate. Arbor Day is also now celebrated in other countries including Australia. 为了把我们的校园装扮的更加美丽漂亮，我们学校在植树节那天组织了一次植树活动。老师带领我们六年级的同学们分组劳动，挖坑、栽种、浇水。我们女生就负责拿拿树苗、浇浇水。呵!都是些新奇树种，有小黄杨，有松树，有棕榈树，还有一些不知名、从未见过的。于是我们几个女孩子就围在赵老师身边叽叽喳喳地问这问那。其中有一种叫做“红叶石楠球”，赵老师把它夸得跟一朵花似的，我却没看出什么稀奇。很快就把它抛到了九霄云外。男老师和男生们累的是满头大汗，一身尘土。我们女生还是叽叽喳喳的跑去拿树苗，跑来浇水。尽管很累，不过，看着绿化后的美丽的校园，我们个个都是那么的开心。

秋季开学时，我刚踏进校园，就被眼前的景色迷住了，特别是那一行“红叶石楠球”。它顶端枝梢鲜红如火，下部叶片亮绿。在三叶草的映衬下格外鲜艳夺目。我们的校园在它们的装扮下更加生机盎然。

不知不觉又是一年植树节要到了。今年植树节种什么呢?对，就在我家院子里种“红叶石楠球”!我把这个想法告诉了爸爸，爸爸说:今天晚上我们就开个家庭会议，你来做演讲，如果你能说服大家的话就种“红叶石楠球”了。我和爸爸击掌说:“一言为定!”晚上我就把 “百度”到的“红叶石楠球”的背了一遍，并作补充说:“火红的‘红叶石楠球’，不仅能美化我们的家园，更象征着我们的生活红红火火!。”听这里我爸爸竖起大拇指说:“说的好，就种它了。明天一早我就去买树苗。”

就这样我家也种上了“红叶石楠球”。我相信随着新农村建设步伐的不断加快，不仅我家的生活会像“红叶石楠球”一样红红火火，全国老百姓生活也会更加红火，我们的祖国也必定会更加繁荣昌盛!

我们同学一大早来到学校，等着7点50分的“我为学校添新绿”活动的开幕式。不久随着运动员进行曲的响起，我们排着队来到塑胶操场，沈老师先叫各班派一个同学上国旗台讲讲对这次植树节的感受。

一年级同学的讲话令我非常的震憾，一(1)班同学讲完了，一(2)班如果我没听错的话，有一个同学竟捐了430元，太令我惊讶了。二年级和三年级的感受谈得非常好，而且声音也很洪亮，真出乎我的意料了。四年级我自己想是我们班的张芳瑜谈得最好了，她说“希望我们的校园变得越来越美丽”……

当《爱的奉献》这优美的旋律响起的时候，我们的心也跟着沸腾起来，最后，我们把同学捐得钱投入了箱子里。四年级段，四(1)班捐了500多，四(2)班捐了300多，四(3)和四(4)班各捐了700多。唉，我们班这样捐出去太丢脸了，我恨不得让我们全班重捐一次，青青校园可是我们每个人的乐园呀!

时间过得真快，开幕仪式就这样结束了，今后让我们大家一起爱护绿化，共创美丽新校园。
