目前分布于我国的四个老虎亚种（东北虎、华南虎、孟加拉虎和印支虎）中，惟有华南虎是中国独有的。19世纪以前，华南虎曾经广泛分布于以我国东南部为主的国内广大地区。20世纪后，由于自然环境变迁、战乱纷扰及人类活动影响等多方面的原因，华南虎的分布区域不断受到挤压，分布地域面积逐渐缩校直至上个世纪80年代以前，由于捕猎和砍伐森林等活动，使华南虎赖以生存的栖息地受到破坏，华南虎的数量急剧减少。

据以往调查估算，目前中国处于野生状态的华南虎仅有20至30只，养殖在中国动物园里的数量也仅有60只，这仪数量比大熊猫还要稀少。在最近的一次野外考察中，甚至没有发现活的野生华南虎个体，华南虎已接近物种灭绝的边缘。

国家林业局全国野生动植物研究与发展中心的副研究员陆军介绍说，由于动物园中的数量有限，用于交配的华南虎之间的血缘关系越来越亲近，目前有的新产虎崽已经开始出现短尾（尾巴短一结）的现象。毫无疑问，如果任由这一趋势发展下去，在不久的将来，这一世界最濒危动物将不复存在。

In your home, correctly dispose dangerous household products. Keep paints, used oil, cleaning solvents, pool chemicals, and other dangerous household chemicals out of drains, sinks, and toilets because many of these products contain harmful substances. In your yard, recycle used motor oil.
