to trying to persuade you not to do that. The reasons are as follows.

ignore the fact that well-educated people usually perform better in their career

and enjoy a better life. Second, we all meet certain difficulties in our lives

and what we should do is take up the challenges and trying to overcome them.

Third, you can apply for a student loan or take part-time jobs to earn some

money. Of course I will trying my best to help you too.

When you are reading something in English, you may often come across a new

word. Whats the best way to know it?

You may look it up in an English-Chinese Dictionary. It will tell you a lot

about the word, the pronunciation, the part of speech, the Chinese meaning and

also how to use this word.

But how can you find it in the dictionaiy both quickly and correctly7

First, all the English words are arranged in thealphabetical order. In the

dictionary you can first see the words beginning with the letter A, then B, C,

D, E,... That means, if there are two, words "desert" and "pull", "desert" will

be certainly before "pull". Then if there are two words both beginning with the

same letter, you may lo0k at the second letter. Then the third, the fourth, ...

For example,"pardon" is before "plough", "judge" before "just",etc.

Do you understand how to look up a word in dictionary?

The dictionary will be your: good friend. I hope youll use it as often as

possible in your English learning.

After reading this book I think it is necessary to share the old legend to everybody .

There is a legend about a bird which sings just once in its life, more sweetly than any other creature on the face of the earth. From the moment it lea一ves the nest it searches for a thorn tree, and does not rest until it has found one. Then, singing among the sa一vage branches, it impales itself upon the longest, sharpest spine. And, dying, it rises above its own agony to out- carol the lark and the nightingale. One superlative song, existence the price. But the whole world stills to listen, and God in His hea一ven smiles. For the best is only bought at the cost of great pain …

Meggie Cleary is just like the bird, and Ralph is her superlative song.

I read the book then watched the movie, both of them ga一ve me great shock, I really admire Meggie, she had the courage to use her whole life to love Ralph, never ga一ve up. She believed that she would love Ralph only in her life. But I don’t like Meggie’s attitude to love, Ralph is a Father, and he mustn’t love Meggie, they really loved each other, but they are not destined to be together. So in my opinion I think Meggie should give in, she shouldn’t fight with God, Ralph had told her he would serve God forever, so Meggie wouldn’t win. Maybe giving up is a good choice. Their love is painful.

Tell the turth I don’t like Meggie neither Ralph, Ralph could not give Meggie happniess while Meggie couldn’t support Ralph to concentrate on his work. So they would not ha一ve happy life, they only made each other feel sad .

Frank is my fa一vorite role. he was short but strong ,and he was one of the main labor in his family. He didn’t want to be a shepherd, but the family needed him , and he must feed he the sheep so that everybody in his family can live better. Once he escaped from home , but it wassn’t long before his father found him and take him home. I feel so sorry that he had a miserable fate. He longed for freedom but most of his life didn’t belong to himself, it’s really a pity .

Frank was different to every man in their home, he loved his mother deeply, and he always helped his mother do the housework. he dreamed to be an outstanding boxer. Frank was considerable, and he always try his best to make Meggie feel happy. As Meggie’s oldest brother, he could be worried about Meggie’s fa一vorite doll, and he even tried to fixed the doll which was distroyed by Meggie’s other brothers. Frank and Meggie would always tell each other what they thought in their deep heart , and they are close friends.

I was so sad when I learned that Frank killed a man and he was sent to the prision. It is really a big shock to Meggie, for Frank was the only one who can listen to Meggie’s secrets. She thought she lost Frank forever. I cannot imagine how painful for Frank to spend dozens years in the prision. He once had good dream about his life, but he had to waste most of his life in prision. In my opinion it was Frank’s father that distoryed his life. His father didn’ t give him freedom, and Frank can’t had strong resistance spirits, and because he didn’t control himself and broke the law.The energitic Frank will never come to us, and he became a man who didn’t wanna talk. He began to be afraid of the world…it is really a pity.

As for Meggie, I think she was a good girl. She was beautiful and smart, but she it was wrong for her to love Ralph. Meggie was an excellent girl, she was able to find an outstanding boy to love her, but she put all her love on Ralph even she married Luke. She married Luke just because Luke looked like Ralph. Meggie wanna be a thorn bird, but I think it was too cruel to her. She was so kind that she shouldn’t stand that king of pain, and I think she was born to ha一ve a happy life. I pity for her.

Both the story of thorn birds and the legend are painful and beautiful, but not every one can be the thorn birds, because it is not our porpose to ha一ve a painful life. We are born to be happy. Olny happiness is the ture meaning of life while the story was written for us to enrich our life. It is a wonderful story.

As the economy is developing so rapidly, people’s attitude towards life is changing at the same time. Credit cards are becoming more and more popular. but what advantages and disadvantages do they have?

Firstly, it is quite convenient ant safe for us to use a credit card. Cash-stolen does not exist in this way. People now take a card instead of a heavy purse wherever they go. Secondly, credit cards represent great honour. People using credit cards shows his special identity and draw others attention.

On the other hand, credit cards are not always that good. Credit cards can lead to overspending somehow. People pay more than they have and then get busy paying off. Furthermore the credit card cheating happens more often.

In my opinion, credit cards do good in our life. But we should use them carefully. Only when used credit cards properly can make contribution to a more convenient and safer life.

The Remembrance of Lilacs

the family had just moved to rhode island, and the young woman was feeling a little melancholy on that sunday in may. after all, it was mothers day -- and 800 miles separated her from her parents in ohio.

she had called her mother that morning to wish her a happy mothers day, and her mother had mentioned how colorful the yard was now that spring had arrived. as they talked, the younger woman could almost smell the tantalizing aroma of purple lilacs hanging on the big bush outside her parentsback door.

later, when she mentioned to her husband how she missed those lilacs, he popped up from his chair. i know where we can find you all you want, he said. get the kids and cmon.

so off they went, driving the country roads of northern rhode island on the kind of day only mid-may can produce:sparkling sunshine, unclouded azure skies and vibrant newness of the green growing all around. they went past small villages and burgeoning housing developments, past abandoned apple orchards, back to where trees and brush have devoured old homesteads.

where they stopped, dense thickets of cedars and ju nipers and birch crowded the roadway on both sides. there wasnt a lilac bush in sight.

come with me , the man said. over that hill is an old cellar hole, from somebodys farm of years ago, and there are lilacs all round it. the man who owns this land said i could poke around here anytime. im sure he wont mind if we pick a few lilacs.

before they got halfway up the hill, the fragrance of the lilacs drifted down to them, and the kids started running. soon, the mother began running, too, until she reached the top. there, far from view of passing motorists and hidden from encroaching civilization, were the towering lilacs bushes, so laden with the huge, cone-shaped flower clusters that they almost bent double. with a smile, the young woman rushed up to the nearest bush and buried her face in the flowers, drinking in the fragrance and the memories it recalled.

while the man examined the cellar hole and tried to explain to the children what the house must have looked like, the woman drifted among the lilacs. carefully, she chose a sprig here, another one there, and clipped them with her husbands pocket knife. she was in no hurry, relishing each blossom as a rare and delicate treasure. finally, though, they returned to their car for the trip home. while the kids chattered and the man drove, the woman sat smiling, surrounded by her flowers, a faraway look in her eyes.

when they were within three miles of home, she suddenly shouted to her husband, stop the car. stop right here! the man slammed on the brakes. before he could ask her why she wanted to stop, the woman was out of the car and hurrying up a nearby grassy slope with the lilacs still in her arms. at the top of the hill was a nursing home and, because it was such a beautiful spring day, the patients were outdoors strolling with relatives or sitting on the porch.

the young woman went to the end of the porch, where an elderly patient was sitting in her wheelchair, alone, head bowed, her back to most of the others. across the porch railing went the flowers, in to the lap of the old woman. she lifted her head, and smiled. for a few moments, the two women chatted, both aglow with happiness, and then the young woman turned and ran back to her family. as the car pulled away, the woman in the wheelchair waved, and clutched the lilacs.

mom, the kids asked, who was that?why did you give her our flowers?is she somebodys mother?the mother said she didnt know the old woman. but it was mothers day, and she seemed so alone, and who wouldnt be cheered by flowers?besides, she added, i have all of you, and i still have my mother, even if she is far away. that woman needed those flowers more than i did.

this satisfied the kids, but not the husband. the next day he purchased half a dozen young lilacs bushes and planted them around their yard, and several times since then he has added more.

i was that man. the young mother was, and is, my wife. now, every may, our own yard is redolent with lilacs. every mothers day our kids gather purple bouquets. and every year i remember that smile on a lonely old womans face, and the kindness that put the smile there.

In this paper, I have learned a lot of things, but I think the first one is the cause of global warming, the increase of carbon dioxide.

Why carbon dioxide will increase? I think the reason is often drive, raising livestock, food factory emissions of smoke...... Etc.. But these are all can solve them together, it can improve the Earth continues to warm, for example: the destination is close enough to ride a bike; destination long enough, can take the public transport; waste livestock treated and then discharged into the Hanoi factory; to build a waste treatment plant...... Etc..

Please do not underestimate the power of carbon dioxide, when the sea level rise, urban water and farmland submerged, eventually facing food shortage. Please call with me: "stop the harm to the earths behavior! Only one earth on which we live. "

Wecouldntidentify any sign of the town marked on the map. Suddenly the car stopped. We had run out of petrol. Therefore, although we had little food with us, we decided to spend the night in the car.

Our meal finished very soon. I went to sleep at once. But my companion Bill who was a poor sleeper went for a walk up the hills. From the top of the hill he saw the lights of the town we were looking for. We unloaded all our luggage and pushed the car to the top of the hill at once. Then we went back to the luggage, loaded the car again and set off down the hill. We reached the town less than a quarter, and found a hotel quite easily.

Miraculous Life

i never considered myself unique, but people are constantly telling me, "you are a miracle." to me, i was just an ordinary "guy" with realistic goals and big dreams. i was a 19-year-old student at the university of texas and well on my way toward fulfilling my "big dream" of one day becoming an orthopedic surgeon.

on the night of february 17, 1981 i was studying for an organic chemistry test at the library with sharon, my girlfriend of three years. sharon had asked me to drive her back to her dormitory as it was getting quite late. we got into my car, not realizing that just getting into a car would never quite be the same for me again. i quickly noticed that my gas gauge was registered on empty so i pulled into a nearby convenience store to buy 2.00 worth of gas. "ill be back in two minutes," i yelled at sharon as i closed the door. but instead, those two minutes changed my life forever.

entering the convenience store was like entering the twilight zone. on the outside i was a healthy, athletic, pre-med student, but on the inside i was just another statistic of a violent crime. i thought i was entering an empty store, but suddenly i realized it was not empty at all. three robbers were in the process of committing a robbery and my entrance into the store caught them by surprise. one of the criminals immediately shoved a .38 caliber handgun to my head, ordered me to the cooler, pushed me down on the floor, and pumped a bullet into the back of my head -- execution style. he obviously thought i was dead because he did not shoot me again. the trio of thieves finished robbing the store and left calmly.

meanwhile, sharon wondered why i had not returned. after seeing the three men leave the store she really began to worry as i was the last person she saw entering the store. she quickly went inside to look for me, but saw no one-only an almost empty cash register containing one check and several pennies. quickly she ran down each aisle shouting, "mike, mike!"

just then the attendant appeared from the back of the store shouting, "lady, get down on the floor. ive just been robbed and shot at!"

sharon quickly dropped to the floor screaming, "have you seen my boyfriend? he has auburn hair." the man did not reply but went back to the cooler where he found me choking on my vomit. the attendant quickly cleaned my mouth and then called for the police and an ambulance.

sharon was in shock. she was beginning to understand that i was hurt, but she could not begin to comprehend or imagine the severity of my injury.

when the police arrived they immediately called the homicide division as they did not think i would survive and the paramedic reported that she had never seen a person so severely wounded survive. at 1:30 a.m. my parents who lived in houston, were awakened by a telephone call from brackenridge hospital advising them to come to austin as soon as possible for they feared i would not make it through the night.

but i did make it through the night and early in the morning the neurosurgeon decided to operate. however, he quickly informed my family and sharon that my chances of surviving the surgery were only 40/60. if this were not bad enough, the neurosurgeon further shocked my family by telling them what life would be like for me if i beat the odds and survived. he said i probably would never walk, talk, or be able to understand even simple commands.

my family was hoping and praying to hear even the slightest bit of encouragement from that doctor. instead, his pessimistic words gave my family no reason to believe that i would ever again be a productive member of society. but once again i beat the odds and survived the three and a half hours of surgery. granted, i still could not talk, my entire right side was paralyzed and many people thought i could not understand, but at least i was stable. after one week in a private room the doctors felt i had improved enough to be transferred by jet ambulance to del oro rehabilitation hospital in houston.

my hallucinations, coupled with my physical problems, made my prognosis still very bleak. however, as time passed my mind began to clear and approximately six weeks later my right leg began to move ever so slightly. within seven weeks my right arm slowly began to move and at eight weeks i uttered my first few words. my speech was extremely difficult and slow in the beginning, but at least it was a beginning. i was starting to look forward to each new day to see how far i would progress. but just as i thought my life was finally looking brighter i was tested by the hospital euro-psychologist. she explained to me that judging from my test results she believed that i should not focus on returning to college but that it would be better to set more "realistic goals."

upon hearing her evaluation i became furious for i thought, "who is she to tell me what i can or cannot do. she does not even know me. i am a very determined and stubborn person!" i believe it was at that very moment that i decided i would somehow, someday return to college.

it took me a long time and a lot of hard work but i finally returned to the university of texas in the fall of 1983 -- a year and a half after almost dying. the next few years in austin were very difficult for me, but i truly believe that in order to see beauty in life you have to experience some unpleasantness. maybe i have experienced too much unpleasantness, but i believe in living each day to the fullest, and doing the very best i can. and each new day was very busy and very full, for besides attending classes at the university i underwent therapy three to five days each week at brackenridge hospital. if this were not enough i flew to houston every other weekend to work with tom williams, a trainer and executive who had worked for many colleges and professional teams and also had helped many injured athletes, such as earl campbell and eric dickerson. through tom i learned: "nothing is impossible and never, never give up or quit."

early, during my therapy, my father kept repeating to me one of his favorite sayings. i have repeated it almost every day since being hurt: "mile by mile its a trial; yard by yard its hard; but inch by inch its a cinch."

i thought of those words, and i thought of tom, my family and sharon who believed so strongly in me as i climbed the steps to receive my diploma from the dean of liberal arts at the university of texas on that bright sunny afternoon in june of 1986. excitement and pride filled my heart as i heard the dean announce that i had graduated with "highest honors", been elected to phi beta kappa, and been chosen as one of 12 deans distinguished graduates out of 1600 in the college of liberal arts. the overwhelming emotions and feelings that i experienced at that very moment, when most of the audience gave me a standing ovation, i felt would never again be matched in my life-not even when i graduated with a masters degree in social work and not even when i became employed full time at the texas pain and stress center. but i was wrong!

on may 24, 1987, i realized that nothing could ever match the joy i felt as sharon and i were married. sharon, my high school sweetheart of nine years, had always stood by me, through good and bad times. to me, sharon is my miracle, my diamond in a world filled with problems, hurt, and pain. it was sharon who dropped out of school when i was hurt so that she could constantly be at my side. she never wavered or gave up on me. it was her faith and love that pulled me through so many dark days. while other nineteen year old girls were going to parties and enjoying life, sharon devoted her life to my recovery. that, to me, is the true definition of love. after our beautiful wedding i continued working part time at the pain center and completed my work for a masters degree. we were extremely happy, but even happier when we learned sharon was pregnant.

on july 11, 1990 at 12:15 a.m. sharon woke me with the news: "we need to go to the hospital… my water just broke." i couldnt help but think how ironic it was that my life almost ended in a convenience store and now on the date "7-11" we were about to bring a new life into this world. this time it was my turn to help sharon as she had helped me over those past years. she was in labor for 15 hours. at 3:10 p.m. sharon and i experienced the birth of our beautiful daughter, shawn elyse segal! tears of joy and happiness came to my eyes as our healthy, alert, wonderful daughter entered this world. we anxiously counted her 10 fingers and her 10 toes and watched her wide eyes take in the world about her. it was truly a beautiful picture that was etched in my mind forever as she lie in her mothers waiting arms, just minutes after her birth. at that moment i thanked god for blessing us with the greatest miracle of all-shawn elyse segal.

There are various kinds of jobs in the world, such as writing, nursing, teaching and engineering. But different people choose different jobs as their ideal careers. This is because everyone has his own interest.

As for me, I have made up my mind to be a teacher. I choose to do so mainly for three reasons. First, I want to teach because I like the pace of academic calendar. Two long vacations offer me an opportunity for reflection, research and writing. Secondly, I want to teach because I like the freedom to make my own mistakes, to learn my own lesson, to stimulate myself and my students. And I can have the opportunity to keep on learning. Finally, I want to teach because, being around the students who are beginning to grow and change in front of me, I will grow and change with them too.

But teaching is no easy job at all. I must study cleverly to obtain more knowledge. And, at the same time, I will make every effort to purify my soul so that I can become an architect of mans soul.

She had been told that Egyptian children used to roll eggs against the pyramids so she invited the children of Washington to roll hard-boiled eggs down the hilly lawn of the new Capitol building! The custom continued, except for the years during the Civil War. In 1880, the First Lady invited children to the White House for the Egg Roll because officials had complained that they were ruining the Capitol lawn. It has been held there ever since then, only canceled during times of war. The event has grown, and today Easter Monday is the only day of the year when tourists are allowed to wander over the White House lawn. The wife of the President sponsors it for the children of the entire country. The egg rolling event is open to children twelve years old and under. The language develops as the media become various, many years ago, people used the language that was very formal, because most oral language was always the same as the paper language. But as the time by, people started to use computer, they shared the information, at the same time, many new language was created. The Internet language is in favor by people, they like to use it, because it is fashionable and very appropriate to express what they mean. I like to use the Internet language, it is so new and fun, what’s more, it is convenient, like I can use the shorten words instead of the long words. The problem of the Internet language is that it is very informal, it can’t be written in the paper, it will changes as the time goes by. In my opinion, we can use the Internet language in informal occasions.

True Happiness

"Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." The authors of the American Declaration proclaimed happiness to be one of the essential rights that make life worth living.William James, the first American psychologist, echoed this emphasis on happiness:"If we were to ask the question:What is human lifes chief concern? One of the answers we should receive would be:It is happiness." Every philosophical and religious system has offered its pathway to happiness for the individual and the group.Happiness has been related to pleasure, refuge from pain, intellectual contemplation, union with God,friendship, children, wealth, honor, successful activity, and even state burial with statues!Today, scientists have joined the dialogue to seek answers about what contributes to happiness or,as they call it,"subjective well-being".

If happiness is activity in accordance with excellence,it is reasonable that it should be in accordance with the highest excellence.– Aristotle The concept of happiness--while difficult to define-- is obviously here to stay. But the desire for happiness can set up expectations that are often hard to fulfill. The right to pursue happiness was conceived of as an inalienable right; the entitlement that everyone be happy was never promised. As captured by Eric Hoffer,a misguided search we hope to provide a framework that will guide you in your personal pursuit of happiness.

News, used to be the most dont like to see it. Since the childhood has been like watching cartoon and foam. Now over the years is already 15 years old girl, the adults always said I dont understand, I also often because of his bad temper, or not doing things. "Knowledge too little" finally let me find the dawn, from then on began to like the news.

Compared to the past, only reading does make me understand a lot of knowledge, also became the academic leaders, but its a downright failure in life. While reading can also know society, but after all the writers praise is the truth in life, and that I love watching cartoons, and eulogize justice and goodness, degeneration and reject evil. In such an environment, my heart has been living in the white cloud, so that as the growth of the age, heart is still very naive. But I will contact with the reality of society, the essence of this society is not absolutely fair, not cheated can only let oneself become strong. But when he does not know this, just complain, disposition also become bad. Fortunately, when I was going to despair, when the news took me, no let me into the who also do not know to have bottomless pit.

Know only after watching the news of the worlds largest and I small. The content of the news is very rich, I also have different preferences, from country to country, down to between people.

Human, science and nature, the three phase was quoted rates are inseparable. The wonders of nature, a little thing, through the baptism of the time, and meticulous observation, often can give a person with enlightenment.

Vast forests, sunshine give plants grace, to be able to get the nutrients and thrive. Such as the morning sun open the eyes of animals, everything is ready. Squirrels, squirrel, embarks from the house, looking for full sweet red pine nuts, all kinds of plant seeds and slowly by seeding them to other places. While the weasel feed on smaller herbivores, sable and then ate the weasel... As if people eat the big fish, big fish eat small fish, small fish eat shrimp, shrimp eat plankton, interlocking between RACES, interdependence restricts each other.

Foreign scientists have done an experiment: introduce the sheep in a rare nature reserve, where the bamiyan, natural environment is superior, and there is special personnel to the group of kids to their natural enemies, Wolf, moved to another place. So the sheep started in the breeding. Until grass and low shrubs are eaten, the number of sheep instead of less. Because they live too comfortable, there is no enemy attack, the number that is too carefree life let their constitution also fell. Then the scientists tried to introduce wolves again. The result is in the relationship between predator and prey, good robust species to survive, wolves eat sick defect part. Natural selection and evolution, has been the nature and even the survival of human society the same criteria.

Cut down some trees, is to destroy a part of birds and insects; Killing of bees, small fish, can also cause cannot spread pollen, fish cannot reproduce problem... Sabotaged a part of the food chain, will bring ill-defined disaster. Because in front of the natural fair, each species, each independent individual organisms is so beautiful and full of value.

Because of the diversity of species and colorful nature. Want to live in harmony with her and get the kind of treatment, will be good to nature, to understand the nature, and have good at discovering and innovative mind.

The Tibetan Minority

As it is known to us all, there are 55 minority groups in China, each with its traditional customs, costumes and culture. Now let’s take a look at the Tibetan Minority.

The Tibetan Minority group live in Qinghai, Gansu, Sichuan and Yunnan Province. And the highest ridge in the world─beautiful and mysterious Tibet is their major habitat .

As the fertilized prairie stretches around the habitants as far as the eyes can see, most people live on animal husbandry, raising sheep, goats, cattle and growing a special kind of plant called Qingke. On account of the unique climate, people often wear warm and comfortable boots in winter, and they are always dressed in delicate robes which are made of the fur of sheep. Often they take off one sleeve of the clothes and tie it around their waists in order to work easily and use it as warm quilts at night.

Both men and women there like wearing silver ornaments, which look very mysterious and full of magical power. And they are good at singing and dancing, and the men there can have braids too. When they meet an important guest, they will present him or her a Hada, a piece of long white silk cloth to show their respect. And they will also treat the guest to a special kind of drink called Suyou Tea, which some people find hard to enjoy.

Besides, the habitants have developed both their own written and spoken languages, and the long poems they wrote play an important role in Chinese literature. And there are many well-protected culture relics as well, taking the grand Budala Palace as an example. It is a historical museum as well as an art treasury, where people can share their spirit belief in Buddhism and get artistic entertainment of the carved paintings and the beautifully-written chirographies.

The Tibetan ethnic group is also famous for its strange custom in funeral. Thinking that the soul belongs to the sky after a person dies, they usually put the body on a platform outdoors, spray on it and wait the condors to come to eat the body. In this way, they believe the soul goes up to the sky.

The Tibetan Minority is brimming over with deep emotions. The people there are very zealous and hospitable and they live freely and happily on the spacious grassland. Their history and culture contribute to the diversity of China, so we certainly should protect them and get them popularized and let them receive great respect they deserve.
