有一则轶事，说到美国总统麦金莱曾想从两个老朋友中选一位担任驻外大使，但是他无法决定谁较适合，后来他回忆起多年以前的一件小事——在一个风雨之夜，麦金莱搭上街车坐了最后一个座位，随后上来一位老妇人，手挽沉重的衣篮，站在走道上没有人让座，这时麦氏的一个朋友坐在前面低头看报，想要借此遗忘周遭的一切。最后还是麦氏起身让了坐。这个朋友一定做梦也想不到，这一件小事竟然决定了他的命运。假使他有先见之明，恐怕连让一百次座位也情愿让给他人。“失之毫厘，廖以千里”，这一类因小失大的例子随处可见。没有随手关门、文件忘了签名等等小事，都可能酿成无法收拾的意外。发明家爱迪生曾经因为小数点的误置而失去一项专利;有些战役的失败关健就在“少了一根钉子”。人往往喜欢成大功、立大业，疏忽了“行远必自尔，登高必自卑”，不肯踏实地从细节注意起。一位法国名厨说;“假使我没有这几把快刀的话，还不是跟一般厨师一样?”这正是注意细节的好榜样。注意细节也不能太过极端，成为“见树不见林”甚至，“见林毫之末而不见舆薪”。我们所强调毋宁是一种“谨慎”之德;西方古希腊罗马之际的人喜欢讲究品德，而公认的诸德之首则是Prudentia亦即谨慎与明智,因这谨慎与明智常是相辅相成的,甚至是不可缺的.有人以成大事者不拘细行,与大德不逾矩,小节出入可也,来为自己的粗线条作风辩白,但是却忘了先反省自己是否具备大德,是否成大事者.{圣经}上记载一位精明的管家把主人吩咐的琐事办得非常妥当,主人对他说;你既在小事上忠信,我必可托你大事;你去负责治理十个城市吧!医师疏忽了细节,可能使病人丧命;律师疏忽了细节,可能使好人蒙冤;在牧师眼中,却没有细节可言,因为凡与人灵有关者皆是重大之事。

注意细节,是负责与谨慎的表现;一个负责而谨慎的人,总是更接近成功。
