on the eighth day the fujian people have another family reunion dinner, and at midnight they pray to tian gong, the god of heaven.

the ninth day is to make offerings to the jade emperor.

the 10th through the 12th are days that friends and relatives should be invited for dinner.

after so much rich food, on the 13th day you should have simple rice congee and mustard greens (choi sum) to cleanse the system.

the 14th day should be for preparations to celebrate the lantern festival which is to be held on the 15th night.

果然在正月十三那天来了一位骑驴的女子(其实是元宵妹妹扮的)。女子说：“我是领旨来烧城的，但百姓求情，我就给你们一个预言：长安在劫，火烧帝阙，十六天火，燄红宵夜。”说完便离去了。汉武帝知道后请东方朔想办法，东方朔说：“听说火神爱吃汤圆，就叫元宵来做吧，毕竟她最会做汤圆，另外还要臣民一起做灯，十五晚上挂满大街小巷，并点燃爆竹，到时候，火神就会以为那是大火，一定能瞒过祂。十五的晚上元宵照东方朔的指示，果然见到自己的家人;从此以后，这个习俗就流传下来，也因为供奉的汤圆是元宵做的，所以人们也叫汤圆“元宵”，正月十五也称做“元宵节”。

"zhong qiu jie", which is also known as the mid-autumn festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar. it is a time for family members and loved ones to congregate and enjoy the full moon - an auspicious symbol of abundance, harmony and luck. adults will usually indulge in fragrant mooncakes of many varieties with a good cup of piping hot chinese tea, while the little ones run around with their brightly-lit lanterns.

重阳节在当青年心目中的淡化，反映了传统文化对年轻一代影响的日渐式微。年轻人可以用学习压力大、工作竞争激烈等客观因素来解释自己的这种忘却，但无法回避的另一个事实是，在传统节日被淡忘的同时，西方节日却在不少年轻人中风光无限。如今许多年轻人热衷于西方的情人节，却对中国传统“七夕”节不屑一顾，就是一例。

事实上大多数中国的传统节日是传统文化的积淀形式，是传统伦理观、价值观的特定反映形态。然而我们不少年轻人却不知道为什么要在重阳节登高、赏菊，更无法体会其中所孕育的尊老敬老的伦理。在此次调查中，90%的年轻人知道自己父母的生日，但从未想到在重阳节为父母送去一份祝福。这种对重阳节“有名无实”的认识，反映了传统伦理道德观念在不少年轻人观念中的某种弱化。

当然这种弱化需要辩证地看待。对于出国留学网传统文化中糟粕的东西，这种弱化无疑有益。但是对于那些类似“老吾老，以及人之老;幼吾幼，以及人之幼”、“贫而无谄，富而无骄”之类优秀的东西，这种弱化就不应该了。因为，恰恰是孕育于后者之中的伦理规范与价值观念，成为构筑现代人格的重要力量之一。

在重阳节被一些年轻人逐渐淡忘的背后，我们看到的是传统文化教育的脆弱，好在这种淡漠已经引起社会的注意。目前北京已有25所中小学把诵读四书五经的部分内容列入课程表。在全国估计已有100万孩子开始把诵读古诗文作为日常学习的必修课。

传说在很久以前，有一只神鸟困为迷路而降落人间，却意外的被不知情的猎人给射死了。天帝知道后十分震怒，就下令让天兵于正月十五日到人间放火，把人类通通烧死。天帝的女儿心地善良，不忍心看百姓无辜受难，就冒着生命的危险，把这个消息告诉了人们。

众人听说了这个消息，犹如头上响了一个焦雷。吓得不知如何是好。过了好久好久，才有个老人家想出个法子，他说：“在正月十四、十五、十六日这三天，每户人家都在家里挂起红灯笼、点爆竹、放烟火。这样一来，天帝就会以为人们都被烧死了”。大家听了都点头称是，便分头准备去了。到了正月十五这天晚上，天兵往下一看，发觉人间一片红光，以为是大火燃烧的火焰，就禀告天帝不用下凡放火了。人们就这样保住了生命及财产。为了纪念这次的成功，从此每到正月十五，家家户户都悬挂灯笼，放烟火来纪念这个日子。

About my character, I can’t describe it well, but generally speaking ,I am a hard_working student especially when I do the things I am interested in. And I am optimistic and confident. My name is ***. ** is my given name. *means sweet and* means person, so my name means a sweet-tempered girl. I actually am! But you can call me June, for your convenience, j-u-n-e, its similar to my Chinese name Jun. I am from Enping, a small city in the southwest of Guangdong Province, near HongKong and Macao. Maybe you have never been there before, its well known for the hot springs there.

In 2003, I got the highest score in the College Entrance Examinations in my city and entered Zhongshan University. My major is Computer Science. My GPA ranks in the top 40% among all students, but I have stronger C programming skills than many others. Also, I was the first one to learn Java in my class.

I was chosen by a teacher of mine to participate in his project. The project was about a LAN chat room, and I developed the instant messaging system in it. I was the only female student in this project team.

As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance. This days important activity is watching lanterns. Throughout the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), Buddhism flourished in China. One emperor heard that Buddhist monks would watch sarira, or remains from the cremation of Buddhas body, and light lanterns to worship Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, so he ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on this day. Later, the Buddhist rite developed into a grand festival among common people and its influence expanded from the Central Plains to the whole of China.

Till today, the lantern festival is still held each year around the country. Lanterns of various shapes and sizes are hung in the streets, attracting countless visitors. Children will hold self-made or bought lanterns to stroll with on the streets, extremely excited. "Guessing lantern riddles"is an essential part of the Festival. Lantern owners write riddles on a piece of paper and post them on the lanterns. If visitors have solutions to the riddles, they can pull the paper out and go to the lantern owners to check their answer. If they are right, they will get a little gift. The activity emerged during peoples enjoyment of lanterns in the Song Dynasty (960-1279). As riddle guessing is interesting and full of wisdom, it has become popular among all social strata.

It is small dumpling balls made of glutinous rice flour with rose petals, sesame, bean paste, jujube paste, walnut meat, dried fruit, sugar and edible oil as filling. Tangyuan can be boiled, fried or steamed. It tastes sweet and delicious. What’s more, tangyuan in Chinese has a similar pronunciation with "tuanyuan”, meaning reunion. So people eat them to denote union, harmony and happiness for the family.

In the daytime of the Festival, performances such as a dragon lantern dance, a lion dance, a land boat dance, a yangge dance, walking on stilts and beating drums while dancing will be staged. On the night, except for magnificent lanterns, fireworks form a beautiful scene. Most families spare some fireworks from the Spring Festival and let them off in the Lantern Festival. Some local governments will even organize a fireworks party. On the night when the first full moon enters the New Year, people become really intoxicated by the imposing fireworks and bright moon in the sky.

Lantern Festival

The 15th day of the 1st lunar month is the Chinese Lantern Festival because the first lunar month is called yuan-month and in the ancient times people called night Xiao. The 15th day is the first night to see a full moon. So the day is also called Yuan Xiao Festival in China.

According to the Chinese tradition, at the very beginning of a new year, when there is a bright full moon hanging in the sky, there should be thousands of colorful lanterns hung out for people to appreciate. At this time, people will try to solve the puzzles on the lanterns and eat yuanxiao (glutinous rice ball) and get all their families united in the joyful atmosphere.
