Dear Sir,

I am writing to apply for a British Council scholarship to study in Britain. I did my five years basic training in medicine at Shanghai University. After this I successfully completed a one-year postgraduate course in Ophthalmology at the Peoples General Hospital, where I am at present serving a two-year probation in the Eye Clinic.

As a result of the publication in 2003 of my article in New Scientist entitled "Soft and Rigid Contact Lenses ", which was based on a survey of 37 patients over 6 months, I made contact with Dr. Li Ming of the Capital Hospital and Dr. Ma Li of the University College Hospital. I have received their help and advice with my current research project, which is a two-year survey of the acceptance of various types of contact lenses in 200 patients.

Despite their help, I feel that I cannot make real progress in this field unless I can actually have day-to-day contact with these specialists. I would therefore like to continue my research at either the Capital Hospital or the UCH as soon as my probationary period here is completed, and I would like to study in Britain for two years.

I enclose a detailed curriculum vitae and an offprint of my article, together with two letters of recommendation from Dr. Li Ming and Dr. Ma Li.

“嘭嘭嘭”，震耳欲聋的声响把我吓了一跳，原来爸爸在外面放烟花，只见烟花直冲云霄，在空中突然爆开，然后像流星雨一样散落开来，烟花的形状真是千姿百态，让人看的眼花缭乱：有的像仙女散花，有的颜色绚丽，像一把五彩伞在空中飞旋，还有的像绽放在半空的菊花。我和姐姐不由得发出阵阵赞叹!美丽的烟花照亮了夜空，也映照着我们欢乐的笑脸，夜空变得更美丽了，烟花放完了，我们还沉浸其中，久久不愿离去……

回家的路上，奶奶给我们讲了讲关于曾祖们的故事，令我印象最深的是外曾祖母。奶奶的爸爸在她还很小的时候就去世了，外曾祖母独自靠做针线活把她的六个孩子拉扯大。我觉得外曾祖母是一个很伟大、坚强的人，我要珍惜现在美好的生活，也要学习她的坚强品格。

With the rise of Western economic and military power beginning in the

mid-19th century, Western systems of social and political organization gained

adherents in China. Some of these would-be reformers rejected Chinas cultural

legacy, while others sought to combine the strengths of Chinese and Western

cultures.

China is a unified nation consisting of many different ethnic groups.

Fifty-six different ethnic groups make up the great Chinese national family.

Because the Han people accounts for more than ninety percent of Chinas

population, the remaining fifty-five groups are generally referred to as "ethnic

minorities." Next to the majority Han, the Mongolian, Hui, Tibetan, and Uygur

peoples comprise the largest ethnic groups. Although Chinas ethnic minorities

do not account for a large portion of the population, they are distributed over

a vast area, residing in every corner of China.

Particularly since the implementation of Chinas opening and reform policy,

the central government has increased investment in minority areas and

accelerated their opening to the outside world. This has resulted in an upsurge

of economic development in these areas. Each of Chinas ethnic minority groups

possesses a distinctive culture. The Chinese government respects minority

customs, and works to preserve, study, and collate the cultural artifacts of

Chinas ethnic minority groups. The government vigorously supports the

development of minority culture and the training of minority cultural workers,

and fosters the development of traditional minority medicine.

The relation among Chinas ethnic groups can be described as "overall

integration, local concentration, mutual interaction." Concentrations of ethnic

minorities reside within predominantly Han areas, and the Han people also reside

in minority areas, indicating that there has been extensive exchanges among

Chinas ethnic groups since ancient times. With the development of the market

economy, interaction among ethnic groups has become even more active in the

areas of government, economics, culture, daily life, and marriage. Linked by

interdependence, mutual assistance, and joint development, their common goals

and interests creating a deep sense of solidarity, Chinas ethnic groups

resemble a great national family, together building Chinese civilization.

小年那天，我去奶奶家玩。到了那儿，我发现昨晚住在奶奶家的弟弟还没起，妹妹也没去，我便独自看起了电视。过了会儿，我身后“啊”的一声，吓了我一大跳，一看，是弟弟。我捂着肚子(捂错地方了)说“啊，心脏病发作了。”弟弟说“你捂成肚子了。哈哈......”不一会儿，妹妹来了，我们玩起电脑。

A week ago， my best friend gave me a lovely cat. I love it very much. It is special. Its fur is black not yellow. So I call it little black. It has the same taste with me. We all like eating fish. 欢度元宵

过完热热闹闹的春节后，最让人期盼的节日就是元宵节了。据说，元宵节在两千多年前的西汉时期就有了，元宵节赏花灯也是起源于西汉的明帝时期。元宵节是中华民族的传统节日，做汤圆、吃汤圆、闹元宵是元宵节的传统习俗。

元宵节这一天的清早，奶奶早早地备好了做汤圆的材料，我们一家人一起动手做起了汤圆。奶奶把汤圆粉放入水中搅拌，接着揉成一个大米浆团，再掰成一小块一小块，然后我们七手八脚地把一个个小米浆团捏成小碗状，再装上甜甜的馅，最后在手心搓成圆形。一个个小汤圆搓好后，又白又胖的，真像弟弟胖乎乎的小圆脸。我们一家吃着自己亲手做的汤圆，心里甜滋滋的。

吃完晚餐，我们一家人一起去江滨公园看花灯。远远望去，江滨公园挂满了各式各样的花灯，红的光、绿的光、黄的光不停地闪烁着。走入公园，我们仿佛置身一片灯的海洋中。首先映入眼帘的是一只硕大无比的金猪，金猪手中捧着一个大大的福字，看上去萌态十足，它是来给人们送福来了。

我们随熙熙攘攘的人群缓缓移动，有太多吸引眼球的花灯了：有蘑菇花灯，有船型花灯，有孔雀开屏，有兔子花灯，还有大树花灯。最受小朋友们欢迎的就是猪猪侠花灯了，猪猪侠披着红色披风，手里拿着超级棒棒糖，它就是正义的化身，很多小朋友们都围着它拍照。我最喜欢时光隧道了，时光隧道约3米长，2米高，隧道里闪闪发光，犹如天上的星星一样亮晶晶的，走到里面，旋转的灯光，让我们感觉穿梭于时空中，似乎要走向一个崭新而又美好的时代。

七夕佳节即将到来，大家知道七夕的故事吗?七夕的传说其实是一个很美好很美好的腐蚀，故事是这样的：

我最喜欢春节了，春节可以得到压岁钱，还可以吃年夜饭。其中我最喜欢吃年夜饭和看烟花了。

先说吃年夜饭吧，我望着满桌香喷喷的美味佳肴：有红彤彤的大螃蟹、油亮亮的大鸡腿、青翠欲滴的白灼菜心，让人看着就垂涎三尺，奶奶给我夹起一块炸莲藕，我尝了一口，真是香脆可口、回味无穷啊！这时爷爷站了起来，说：“干杯！”我们大家毫不推辞，也纷纷举起高脚杯，回答道：“新年快乐！”房间里洋溢着和睦愉快的气氛。

再说放烟花吧，夜晚：“噼噼啪啪”的鞭炮礼花的声响起来了。“砰——”一声巨响，火星在夜幕中扩散开来，随即天空中绽放出一朵硕大的桃花。“砰——砰——”无数礼花炸开来，像一颗颗拖着长尾巴的流星划过天空。“砰——”一颗不起眼的小火种在半空爆裂，随即变成一把巨大的绿伞在漆黑的夜幕中展开。真是“天花无数月中开，五色祥云绕绛台。堕地忽惊星彩散，飞空频作雨声来。

我喜欢的传统节日是春节，因为春节可以放炮，可以吃饺子，可以收红包，还可以看春节联欢晚会……。我最喜欢大年三十的晚上，因为可以放炮。吃完饭我出去放炮了，我小心翼翼地把炮点着，一，二“嘣”炮炸了。我赶紧躲到一边，“刺”炮又喷出彩色的光芒，像个飞碟一样。我又点着了一个炮，“嗯，它怎么不炸呢?”我自言自语地说，就上前用手摸了摸。突然，“刺”炮喷出了彩色的火焰。“啊”我吓的大叫一声，扔下炮就跑。我还想放炮就再放一个，我把炮放在地上，点燃它的线。我不敢再摸它，只好慢慢的等了两分钟，又等了两分钟，还没动静，我鼓起勇气向前去看了看。哦!没着，我只好又重新点一次，“啾”的一声炮飞上了天。炮在半空中炸开，成了一朵美丽的“花”……啊!放炮真有趣，我真想天天放炮呀!

中秋之夜农历八月十五是中秋节，是一家人团聚的日子。这一天，妈妈请来了外公、外婆，一起过这个传统节日。

晚上，爸爸烧了一桌丰盛的菜，有笋干烧肉、糖醋排骨、清蒸鱼、海蛰头、青菜、爆鱼……真是色香味俱全。我们一家人边吃边谈，尽享这天伦之乐。我最爱吃糖醋排骨，酸酸的，甜甜的，很好吃;爆鱼也不错，又香又脆，我一连吃了好几块，吃得肚子滚圆滚圆。

晚饭后，我们开始品尝月饼和瓜果。我吃了一个"雪月饼"，好像在吃奶油冷饮似的，嘴里凉凉的，爽爽的。

最后，我们一起来到南市桥上赏月。我偎依在妈妈怀里，仰望天空，月亮像一个大银盘，高高地挂在空中，圆圆的，亮亮的，把大地照得如同白昼。"每逢家节倍思亲!"望着如镜如银的圆月，我不仅想起了上海的大姨一家，特别是表哥金吉吉，我俩一起玩"三国演义"游戏的一幕幕情景又浮现在了我的眼前。

Dear Sir,

I am a December 2003 graduate from the University of San Francisco (USF) with a bachelors degree in International Business. As part of my career planning, I am very interested in supplementing my international business education with a basic knowledge of the Chinese language. This I hope will help me enter into business commerce with business organizations partnering with Chinas economic development.

I already have information from BLCU and hope to study there for at least one full year starting with this summers program continuing through the fall and spring semester 2006. Can your office advise me if such scholarships might be available to me?

I have been studying Chinese for one year now. I am not sure what level I belong to. I was told that there will be an HSK test in our university in September. I am planning to attend the test. But I dont know if the result of the test is recognized by your university. If so, can it be a help for me to apply for the scholarship?

晚上，北风吹来，我们一点也不觉得冷。爸爸说：“我们和肖恩一起滑雪吧。”这个提议不错，爸爸哥哥就一手拉着我，让我蹲在地上。他们在雪地里跑得很快。这时我有一种飞翔的感觉，一直想滑下去，可是他们已经很累了。

然后我们又打雪仗。我和哥哥都是打雪仗的好手。我和哥哥跑在前面，爸爸在后面追。我们躲在树后和汽车旁边一会儿。父亲在后面拼命追，我和哥哥拼命往前跑。这么冷的天，我们很快就出了一身汗。

跑累了，我们玩雪人。我爸爸、哥哥和我堆了一个可爱的雪人。但是雪人的眼睛和鼻子是什么做的呢？我在地上捡起一根树枝，爸爸把它分成几段，然后做了雪人的鼻子，眼睛，眉毛。我们想给它拍张照，但我们没有带相机。这时候我妈催我们赶紧回家。天已经很冷了，怕冻着我们，然后我们就不情愿的回家了。

春节，不但是一个吉祥如意的喜庆日子，还是我们中华民族的传统节日。但是，我还是最喜欢那热热闹闹的除夕。

除夕夜是最欢快的的时候。大街小巷张灯结彩，人们笑语不绝。当新年的钟声准时敲响时，瞬间，五颜六色的礼花绽放在空中，那一颗颗导弹似的“冲天炮”也冲上云霄，那声音真是震耳欲聋、响彻天穹！礼花千姿百态，有的像银蛇狂舞，有的似点缀着美丽流苏的绿绒大伞，有的如孔雀那五彩斑斓的羽毛，有的像绽放的花朵儿……火树银花不夜天，它们把城市装点的绚丽多彩。我那淘气的弟弟点响爆竹，在噼里啪啦声中载歌载舞！每个人的脸上都荡漾着幸福甜蜜的笑容。这真是“爆竹声中一岁除，春风送暖入屠苏”啊！那时，心中就盼望着自己以后的日子也像这噼里啪啦的鞭炮声一样红红火火，亮亮堂堂！

年夜饭端上桌，哇，真是一顿丰盛的美味佳肴啊！空气中不仅混合着食物的香气，还饱含着其乐融融的家的味道。肚子已经吃个半饱，可团圆饭的压轴菜——水饺端上来了。有韭菜豆腐的，有鸡蛋虾仁的，有芹菜肉的，有白菜粉条的……这么多美味的饺子，看得就让人垂涎三尺！弟弟更是迫不及待地想吞到“大布袋”里去了，急得抓耳挠腮，口水“飞流直下三千尺”，让人笑得前仰后合。

当然了，春节，不仅仅是大家在一起吃喝玩乐，更重要的是体现了我们国家的一种民族精神。它融入的是一种亲情，一种对美好的生活的追求以及人与人之间的和谐安宁。

I am writing this letter to say "thank you." First and foremost, it is clear that you, just like "our foreign mother", were very patient to us. Additionally, needless to say, you taught me a lot, not only English knowledge but also your life wisdom;consequently, all of us have fallen in love with English and study. Last but certainly not least, there is no doubt that we had a great time together, which we will keep in mind forever.

By the way, I cant wait to tell you something new about my class. After you left for the America, we had an English competition. We all did very well, using the knowledge you told us. No one can deny you helped us so much!
