过去山上有座破庙，庙里只有一位年轻的尼姑。这尼姑苦钻学问，长得又美，十分惹人喜爱。就是一点，不守清规戒律，喜欢结交朋友。一天，他遇到一个很有学问的穷秀才，马上就与他成了朋友。于是穷秀才就邀请尼姑到他家作客，两人非常要好。后来，这个尼姑就经常跑到穷秀才家去串门。日久天长，你来我往，朝夕与共，情同手足。有时候谈出兴致来，竟忘了吃饭，睡觉，连五更天都不知道。他们的行为很快就被传出去，人们纷纷议论。不久，传到财主吕员外的耳朵里，他以为这样的事情有伤风化，进县衙就把小尼姑和穷秀才告了。这一状果然就告中了，衙役立刻把小尼姑压倒大堂上审问，小尼姑好像没事一样，冷笑不语。这下县太爷气极了，命人抬上刑具。正要施刑，小尼姑赶忙说：‘不必动刑，小人招供。’衙役立刻递过纸笔，只见小尼姑提笔写道：‘刀刁相像，瓜爪难分，戊戍胸中一点，斋齐足下分明。’小尼姑写好之后放在地上。差役忙吧供词呈上。县太爷一看供词，又大量了一下尼姑，怒容顿减，点头说：‘原来如此!’。便走下堂来，朝小尼姑上下一看，接着禽兽扶起小尼姑，并向小尼姑施一大礼，送出衙门。”

说道这里，范仲淹问牧童们：“你们想想，这是怎么回事啊?”

牧童们都听迷了，你看我，我看你，不知道怎么回事。

范仲淹说：“县太爷是有学问的人，看了招供，才知道小尼姑学问很深。所以，才下堂朝小尼姑反复大量，知道自己差点把案子断错了，只好向小尼姑赔礼，放回庙里。”

牧童们齐问：“错在哪里呢?”

范仲淹说：“小尼姑不是说：‘斋齐组下分明吗?足就是脚啊。”

“脚?”牧童们还是不解。

“对，就是脚。”范仲淹接着说：“原来这个尼姑是个大脚，本身却是男子。他为了逃避包办婚姻，住进破庙，研读经书。他和秀才是在一起研究学问，所以往来密切。这个县太爷十分爱才，问明情况之后，还常去向他们请教，从此，他们三人成为了好友。你们看相形字中仅一点点区别，就有这样大的不同，一定不能写错，念错，一个人作学问就讲‘认真’二字。”

小辫子听到这里，扑通朝范仲淹跪下，恳求他说：“先生，你就做我们的先生，教我们认字吧。”牧童全都朝范仲淹跪下，异口同声地说：“好先生，求求你，你就教我们认字吧。”

范仲淹被这样勤奋好学的牧童们所感动，恨不得将满肚子的学问都教给他们，只是在此不能久住。正在犹豫不知如何回答的时候，滕子京找他来了，范仲淹把此事简要地向滕子京说了。滕子京一直就有创办学校，开启民智的想法，也很喜欢这些好学的牧童们，便一口答应下来，兴办学堂。

就这样，滕子京花钱在山上盖了座“范仲淹书堂”，牧童从此有了先生，也有了书堂，白天放牧，晚上识字。他们时时不忘范仲淹给他们讲的故事，认认真真，格外用功，其中一些人后来还成为了国家的栋梁。
