My uncle has been in America for quite a few years. He used to live in Pudong. He wanted to come back to his homeland very much. Last summer he came to Shanghai and I took him to visit Pudong. My summer vacation of this year was very enjoyable. I went to the countryside to spend my summer holidays. It is very beautiful there. It was fine on March 12, 2001. I got up early that day. All the students in

our school went to the hill to plant trees.

We arrived at the hill at eight oclock. The teacher asked each of us to

our monitor set a good example for us. Though he was ill, he worked harder. When

The traffic problem is one of the most serious problems in my hometown.

Recently, more and more people have private car, but the roads are so narrow

that we have to fight against the heavy traffic when we go out. Especially

during the rush hours, cars and buses are unable to move. To make things worse,

many people are killed in the traffic accidents. How miserable it is!

For the sake of our life and security, some measures must be taken to

change the present situation. In the first place, as there are a great many

cars, we should control the number of private cars and vehicles and use the

public transportation more often. Secondly, the government should widen the

roads and build more flyovers, so as to ease the traffic pressure and reduce the

traffic accidents. In addition, the undergrounds and light rails should be

constructed, so that we can have more choices when going out and do not have to

worry about the traffic jams in the future.

I believe the traffic problem could be solved if we devote our actions to

them.

The Lantern Festival which occurs on the 15-th day of the First Month of the Chinese Year marks the end of the New Years Holidays.

Lanterns are everywhere. A most interesting tradition is the posting of riddles called Lantern Riddles. Riddles are written on pieces of paper and posted on lanterns or wall. Any one solving the riddle is awarded a prize. And the food for lantern festival is Tang Yuan i have made some Tang Yuan in a ginger soup my wife got a serious cold so i cooked a pot of ginger soup for her. Teachers have stifled creativity in the pursuit of the accumulation of facts, and parents have forced children to spend mind-numbing hours cramming for exams. The aim is to make education more pleasant, more useful and, above all, to challenge students to think for themselves.

What has prompted the reforms is a belated recognition that Chinas education system is failing to produce enough innovative thinkers. In addition, students are deeply unhappy. A survey conducted by the Education Ministry five years ago found more than 80% of students disliked school. Dropout rates have been rising in rural areas—partly for economic reasons but also because of the stultifying atmosphere of their classrooms. Exam pressures frequently lead to suicides. According to a survey last year among senior secondary-school students and university freshmen in one area, more than 50% had considered killing themselves.

Several other countries in East Asia, including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, are grappling with similar problems. But the implications of Chinas reform efforts are particularly profound. Chinas traditional education methods are ideally suited to a political culture that requires citizens to submit blindly to authority. By encouraging students to question their teachers and regard them as equals (even official literature now talks of fostering a “democratic” atmosphere in classrooms), China could be ushering in a new kind of relationship between the rulers and the ruled.
