So he lived by himself herding cattle and farming. One day, a fairy from heaven Zhi Nu (Weaver Maid) fell in love with him and came down secretly to earth and married him. The cowhand farmed in the field and the Weaver Maid wove at home. They lived a happy life and gave birth to a boy and a girl. Unfortunately, the God of Heaven soon found out the fact and ordered the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens to bring the Weaver Maid back.

With the help of celestial cattle, the Cowhand flew to heaven with his son and daughter. At the time when he was about to catch up with his wife, the Queen Mother took off one of her gold hairpins and made a stroke. One billowy river appeared in front of the Cowhand. The Cowhand and Weaver Maid were separated on the two banks forever and could only feel their tears. Their loyalty to love touched magpies, so tens of thousands of magpies came to build a bridge for the Cowhand and Weaver Maid to meet each other. The Queen Mother was eventually moved and allowed them to meet each year on the 7th of the 7th lunar month. Hence their meeting date has been called "Qi Xi" (Double Seventh).

Scholars have shown the Double Seventh Festival originated from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD220). Historical documents from the Eastern Jin Dynasty (AD371-420) mention the festival, while records from the Tang Dynasty (618-907) depict the grand evening banquet of Emperor Taizong and his

concubines. By the Song (960-1279) and Yuan (1279-1368) dynasties, special articles for the "Qi Xi" were seen being sold on markets in the capital. The bustling markets demonstrated the significance of the festival.

Today some traditional customs are still observed in rural areas of China, but have been weakened or diluted in urban cities. However, the legend of the Cowhand and Weaver Maid has taken root in the hearts of the people. In recent years, in particular, urban youths have celebrated it as Valentines Day in China. 奶奶，这么多年来，感谢您在我成长的旅途中陪伴我一路走来。依稀记得，上小学的时候，我学习成绩特别优异，每次开完毕学式后，总能拿回许多奖状，那时的您总会很高兴地将它们贴在家里最显眼的地方。当邻居或来买东西的顾客看到后并夸奖我时，您总会打趣地对他们说：「这些奖状不知道会不会是隆儿他自己买来的。」

虽然您嘴上这样说，但我知道，您是在为我骄傲。在我上初中的时候，每天早上您总是起得很早，为我做早餐，让我吃得饱饱地去上学，那时的关爱使我至今难忘。

一年前的秋季，我被永春师范录取了，奶奶您陪我来学校，当您要离开我时，您落泪了，颤抖地哭着对我说：「在这里要好好地学习，家里不用牵挂……」可是您知道吗?在您面前我没有哭，但当您搭上班车渐渐离开我的视野时，我已模糊了双眼。孙儿怎能不牵挂你们?殊不知，我初中毕业后，要不是爷爷奶奶你们想尽一切办法帮我入户口，或许现在的我，仍然还是一名「黒娃」， 没有资格继续求学。

俗话说得好：「鸦有反哺之义，羊有跪奶之恩。」爷爷奶奶，现在的我已经长大，再过几年，我就可以真正意义上地报答你们了。可是，每次放假回家看见你们二老头上新增的白发，我的心就如同被刀绞似的难受。我恨不得时间可以快点流逝，我可以早点毕业，早点回报你们。

记得上次放假回家，当我听见奶奶您说：「前些天呀，我跟你爷爷都病了，身边没人照顾，要自己起床买饭、找医生……」那时候，我的眼泪已经掉下来了，我责怪自己在学校什么都不知道。我很彷徨，害怕失去你们。我不想让「树欲静而风不止，子欲养而亲不待」的悲剧发生在我身上，否则我会抱憾终生!人的一生最大的不安，莫过于来自内心的遗憾了。

爷爷，孙儿知道您喜欢抽烟和喝酒，可是现在您已经年迈，还请您少抽少喝点吧。您或许不知道，每当我看见您咳嗽时的难受劲儿，心有多么痛。

奶奶，爷爷的年事已高，您就迁就点，别老和他吵架，这样对身体不好。孙儿最大的心愿，就是你们二老可以健健康康、快快乐乐、长命百岁。
